P0756

Shift Solenoid "B" Performance

high severityDo not drive$300-$2,500

Shift B solenoid performance — commanded gear not engaging.

Common symptoms

  • Missed shifts
  • Stuck gear
  • CEL

Likely causes

  • Worn solenoid
  • Worn clutch pack
  • Low/dirty fluid

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: worn solenoid.
  2. Cost & scope. $300-$2,500
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there. Don't keep driving with this one active — risk of damage.

P0756 is the performance code for Shift Solenoid B — the solenoid is electrically present and responding to commands, but the shift event it controls isn't happening correctly. Same root-cause matrix as P0751: a stuck shift valve in the valve body (more common than a stuck solenoid), a worn clutch pack that won't apply, a separator-plate gasket cross-feed, or accumulated varnish in the valve bore. Fluid first; burnt fluid with P0756 nearly always means the clutch pack controlled by this solenoid (typically 2-3 or 3-4 depending on application) is wearing or already gone. Live data verification: with the scan tool watching commanded gear and actual ratio, drive through the shift the solenoid controls and watch for the actual ratio to either not change, change to the wrong value, or flare (RPM spike) before settling — flare specifically indicates clutch slippage during apply rather than valve stick. Wet-air testing the valve body off-vehicle separates valve-stick from clutch wear and is the standard ATRA next step before any teardown.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2009 Honda Pilot/Odyssey V6 5AT throws P0756 from 3rd-clutch pack failure — same VIN-range TSB issue as P0730/P0731, often rebuild territory past 130k. 2005-2010 GM 4L60E/4L65E throws P0756 from a stuck 2-3 shift valve in the valve body — same Sonnax valve-kit fix as P0751, $40-80 part. 2004-2009 Aisin AW55-50SN in Volvo/Saab/GM N-body (Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6) throws P0756 from worn valve-body bores — Sonnax oversized-valve kit required, plus the famous TCC apply-relay/wiring issue compounds it. 2007-2013 Chrysler Town & Country/Journey with the 62TE throws P0756 from a failed solenoid pack/integrated-TCM assembly — replace as a unit per Chrysler bulletin. Estimated repair: $250 (valve-body kit) to $4,200 (rebuild).
