OBD-II Code · Transmission
P0765
Shift Solenoid D Malfunction
Shift solenoid D circuit fault.
Common symptoms
- Harsh shifts
Likely causes
- Failed solenoid
- Wiring
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed solenoid.
- Cost & scope. $200-$800
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there. Don't keep driving with this one active — risk of damage.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0765 indicates an electrical fault in the Shift Solenoid D circuit, which on most 4-speed and 5-speed automatics controls overdrive engagement or torque converter clutch apply depending on application. The PCM has detected an open, short to ground, or short to voltage condition. Begin with the cheapest checks: confirm the code is not a companion to a transmission internal harness failure (P0760 + P0765 together is a near-certain internal harness or case-connector fault), then unplug the external transmission connector and measure solenoid resistance pin-to-pin. Typical specs: 19 to 31 ohms on GM 4L60E shift solenoids, 9 to 16 ohms on Ford 4R75W, 11 to 15 ohms on Chrysler 45RFE solenoid pack, and 10 to 15 ohms on Toyota A340/A750 solenoids. Anything reading 0 ohms (short), infinite (open), or out of the spec band on a hot transmission confirms the solenoid. If the solenoid is in spec, back-probe the harness between the PCM/TCM and case connector for the proper 12V key-on and check for ATF migration up the wires (signs of greasy or stained insulation). Caveat: many transmissions share solenoid D between OD and TCC control, so a P0765 with a TCC-related symptom (no lockup, shudder) can also be caused by a failed TCC apply circuit in the valve body, not just the solenoid itself.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2000 to 2005 Chevrolet Impala/Monte Carlo with 4T65E commonly sets P0765 from the 2-3 shift solenoid (designated D on this trans) failing electrically, with GM PI04132 calling for solenoid pack replacement. 2003 to 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with 45RFE/545RFE sets P0765 from the entire solenoid pack assembly failing, and Chrysler TSB 21-009-04 covers updated solenoid pack with revised screens. 2004 to 2009 Toyota 4Runner/Tacoma with A750E/A750F flags the SL solenoid D code from internal valve body sleeve wear scoring the solenoid plunger. 2005 to 2010 Ford Focus with 4F27E sets P0765 from the transmission range sensor or internal harness corrosion at the case connector pass-through. Estimated repair: $220 to $950.
