P0754 is the intermittent-fault sibling of P0751 — shift solenoid A is producing inconsistent shift behavior that the TCM sees as a sporadic gear-ratio mismatch. The customer complaint is usually a shift that occasionally feels firm/harsh, occasionally feels soft/slipping, and once in a while just doesn't happen at all on a particular shift event. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Live-data the commanded gear vs. actual calculated gear during multiple drive cycles — a healthy transmission matches the two within a single sample; an intermittent solenoid will show occasional one- to two-second mismatches that line up with the customer's complaint. (2) Heat-test the solenoid by ohming it after a hard 30-minute drive — a coil that reads 12 ohms cold and 25+ ohms hot is breaking down with temperature and will produce intermittent shifts at operating temp that can't be reproduced in the shop bay. (3) Inspect the valve body bore for the shift valve served by solenoid A — partial varnish makes the valve sticky, which produces intermittent shift behavior even with a healthy solenoid. (4) Check the transmission fluid level and condition — low fluid causes momentary line pressure drops on tight cornering or heavy braking that mimic an electrical intermittent. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: replacing the solenoid on a transmission with burnt fluid and worn clutch packs gets you a code-free week followed by the same P0754 returning — fluid color and pan-magnet debris tell you whether the transmission has miles left in it before you quote a solenoid job.

Vehicle-specific patterns: GM 4L60E sees intermittent P0754 in the 80k-120k mile window before hard P0751 sets — preventive solenoid replacement at the first intermittent code saves the transmission. Ford 4R70W / 4R75W throws intermittent P0754 from SS-A heat breakdown and from a sticky 1-2 shift valve that releases when cold and binds when hot.
