OBD-II Code · Network
U0155
Lost Communication with Instrument Panel Cluster
IPC communication lost.
Common symptoms
- Dead gauges
- No warning lights
Likely causes
- Failed cluster
- Wiring
- Power
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed cluster.
- Cost & scope. $300-$1,500
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
U0155 means the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) has stopped communicating, which is significant because on many vehicles the IPC contains one of the two 120-ohm CAN bus terminators. If the cluster goes dark and you lose communication with multiple downstream modules, you may have a terminator problem masquerading as a cluster problem. Cheapest-first: check cluster fuses (usually two: ignition and constant battery for trip memory), then verify ground at the cluster connector. A common shortcut is a key-off 60-ohm reading across DLC pins 6 and 14; if you read 120 ohms instead, the cluster terminator is open (or the cluster is disconnected) and that alone will cause U0155 plus a cascade of comm faults. With the cluster still installed, scope CAN-H/CAN-L at the cluster connector to confirm 2.5V each at idle. Be aware that 2007+ clusters are odometer-coded and VIN-locked, so a used cluster requires either dealer programming or specialized re-flash (Mileage Plus, XTOOL X100 Pad3, Autel IM608). Buying a $600 used cluster off eBay without confirming the bus has both terminators and the cluster has VIN-match capability is the classic U0155 rabbit hole.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2006 GM trucks (Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban) suffer the famous stepper-motor and backlight failure on the cluster, often accompanied by intermittent U0155 from cold-solder joints on the cluster PCB; rebuild services restore the original cluster keeping the VIN/odometer intact. 2007-2014 Chrysler/Dodge with TIPM sees U0155 with no-crank and dead cluster as the TIPM ignition relay fails. 2004-2008 Ford F-150 has known cluster fade and U0155 from cold solder; Ford issued service actions on early trucks. 2006-2011 BMW E90 sees U0155 from the cluster's K-CAN line corroded at the X14 connector behind the glove box. Estimated repair: $90 to $1100.
