U0101

Lost Communication with TCM

high severityDo not drive$200-$1,500

Transmission control module communication lost.

Common symptoms

  • Trans in limp mode
  • Warning lights

Likely causes

  • Failed TCM
  • Wiring
  • Connector

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed tcm.
  2. Cost & scope. $200-$1,500
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there. Don't keep driving with this one active — risk of damage.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

U0101 is set when the transmission control module (TCM) drops off the CAN bus, but on many platforms (Ford 6R80, GM 6L80, ZF 8HP, Aisin AS69RC) the TCM is mechatronic and lives inside the transmission pan, so its failure mode is unique. Cheapest-first: scan all modules and note which ones are missing communication, because U0101 alone points at the TCM, but U0101 paired with U0100/U0140 points at the whole bus. Check fuse for TCM ignition feed (often labeled TCM, TCCM, or TRANS) and confirm battery voltage at the TCM connector with key on; then verify ground integrity. Back-probe CAN-H/CAN-L at the TCM connector itself, not just the DLC, and look for the same 2.5V idle and 60 ohms key-off. On stand-alone TCMs (Allison 1000, older Chrysler 545RFE), internal solder-joint failures on the J1 connector are common and look identical to a bus problem until you wiggle-test the connector with a scope on CAN. Replacing a $2500 mechatronic unit without confirming the bus terminators are healthy and the internal harness pass-through is intact is the standard $3000 mistake.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2011-2019 Ford F-150 with 6R80 transmission suffers internal transmission harness chafe where the lead-frame plug rubs the case, setting U0101 with harsh shifts; Ford TSB 14-0040 addresses this with a revised lead frame. 2006-2010 GM 6L80/6L90 (Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon) sees TCM solder-joint cracks on the internal valve-body PCB causing intermittent U0101 hot, especially over 180F transmission temp. 2007-2012 Dodge/Ram with 545RFE/68RFE shows U0101 from the TIPM ignition relay welding contacts, killing TCM feed during heat-soak. 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK with NAG1 transmission gets U0101 from the 13-pin transmission connector seal leaking ATF into the harness and wicking up to the TCM. Estimated repair: $180 to $4500.
