Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0773)

low severitySafe to drive$50-$2,000

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
  2. Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

P0773 is the electrical fault on shift solenoid E circuit — this is typically a fifth or sixth solenoid in transmissions with more than 4 forward gears, or the TCC-related solenoid on some platforms. Cheapest-first ladder: identify which physical solenoid is the E designation for this transmission (it varies by platform); measure the resistance at the case connector against the FSM spec for that specific solenoid; inspect the internal pass-through harness; check TCM driver voltage with the connector unplugged. Caveat: shift solenoid lettering is not standardized across manufacturers, so always cross-reference the code definition against the specific FSM before ordering parts.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2013 GM trucks with the 6L80 and 6L90 set P0773 from internal wiring harness failure or a sticking PWM shift solenoid in a worn valve body bore. 2006-2013 BMW 5 and 7 series with the ZF 6HP26 set P0773 from mechatronic internal solenoid failure. 2010-2017 Ford Edge and Explorer with the 6F50/6F55 set P0773 from internal solenoid body failure that Ford services as a complete solenoid body assembly. 2003-2009 Volvo XC90 and Saab 9-5 with the Aisin AW55-50SN set P0773 from internal harness failure that pairs with valve body bore wear. Estimated repair: $300 to $2,400.
