P0746

Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0746)

low severitySafe to drive$50-$2,000

See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.

Common symptoms

  • CEL

Likely causes

  • See deep dive

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
  2. Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

P0746 means the pressure control solenoid A (the main line pressure or EPC solenoid on most platforms) is mechanically stuck off or hydraulically defaulting to low pressure, which the TCM detects by commanding pressure and seeing the actual line pressure or shift behavior fail to respond. Cheapest-first ladder: scan live data for commanded versus actual line pressure (when the platform reports both) and watch for a flatline at minimum; check fluid level and condition; pull the pan, drop the valve body, and inspect the EPC solenoid screen for ferrous debris that mechanically pins the spool; bench-test the solenoid resistance against spec before assuming it is bad. Caveat: a stuck-off P0746 with burned fluid and debris in the pan is a symptom of a failing transmission, not the root cause.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2010 Nissan Maxima/Murano with the RE5F22A and Pathfinder RE5R05A set P0746 from a clogged EPC screen and worn EPC bore in the valve body, a Sonnax oversized EPC valve and sleeve is the documented repair. 2001-2008 Volvo S60/S80/XC90 and 2003-2011 Saab 9-3 with the Aisin AW55-50SN set P0746 from valve body bore wear — a Sonnax AW55-50SN reseal kit with oversized parts is the industry-standard fix. 2007-2014 GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave with the 6T70/6T75 set P0746 alongside delayed engagement. 1998-2005 Toyota Camry/Avalon with the U140E/U241E set P0746 from a sticking SLT solenoid. Estimated repair: $320 to $2,800.
