OBD-II Code · Forced Induction
P0234
Turbocharger Overboost
Turbo producing too much boost.
Common symptoms
- CEL
- Limp mode
- Reduced power
Likely causes
- Stuck wastegate
- Failed boost solenoid
- Leaking intercooler hose
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: stuck wastegate.
- Cost & scope. $150-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there. Don't keep driving with this one active — risk of damage.

P0234 is a turbocharger overboost condition, set when actual manifold absolute pressure exceeds the commanded boost target by a calibrated amount, typically 3 to 5 psi over for several seconds. Cheapest first: scan live data during a wide-open-throttle pull and graph commanded boost versus actual boost; most modern gas turbos target 15 to 22 psi peak, diesels 25 to 35 psi. If actual exceeds commanded by more than 4 psi, the boost control is failing open. Inspect the wastegate actuator: with the engine off, you should be able to move the actuator rod against spring resistance by hand on internal wastegate setups, or watch the electronic actuator sweep through its full range during a bidirectional command from the scan tool. A stuck-closed wastegate (rusted shaft, broken linkage) will run boost up rapidly. Next, test the boost control solenoid: with key on, command the solenoid and listen for an audible click, then test resistance (typically 25 to 35 ohms) and ensure the vacuum or pressure lines to the wastegate are intact and routed correctly. A cracked or disconnected boost control line allows the wastegate to stay closed and over-boost. Caveat: aftermarket tunes commonly trigger P0234 because the boost target was raised but the threshold was not.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: Ford EcoBoost 3.5L (2010-2016 F-150, Flex, Taurus SHO) sees P0234 from stuck wastegate actuators, addressed in Ford TSB 14-0194 with updated actuators and a recalibration. VW/Audi 2.0T TSI K03 turbo (2006-2013 GTI, A4, Passat) sets P0234 from a sticking N75 boost control solenoid, a $40 part. BMW N54 (2007-2010 335i, 535i) sets P0234 from failed wastegate rattle and stuck actuators on both turbos, often paired with P0299. Subaru WRX EJ255 (2008-2014) sees P0234 from a stuck boost control solenoid or a wastegate actuator that won't open. Estimated repair: $40 to $1,800.
