P0196 means the engine oil temperature sensor signal is in range electrically but its reading doesn't make sense compared to other engine parameters — the classic rationality fault. The ECU cross-references EOT against engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature, run time since startup, and ambient temperature, and if EOT reads 70°F after the engine has been running at full load for 30 minutes (when ECT is at 210°F and IAT is at 130°F), the ECU sets P0196 because the sensor is alive but lying. Cheapest first: scan live data with the engine fully warmed up and look at EOT vs ECT — under normal operating conditions, EOT should be within 10-20°F of ECT on a turbocharged or hard-worked engine and within 30°F on a naturally aspirated cruiser. An EOT pegged 50°F+ below ECT after a long highway run is a stuck-low sensor; an EOT reading wildly above ECT at idle is a stuck-high sensor (or genuine oil-cooling failure, which has its own caveats). Check the sensor's response curve by graphing EOT during a cold-start warm-up cycle — a healthy sensor produces a smooth curve from ambient up to operating temp over 5-15 minutes; a stepped, flat, or noisy curve indicates a degraded thermistor. The expensive misdiagnosis: throwing a $100-$300 sensor at a P0196 that was actually caused by a stuck-open oil-cooler thermostat keeping oil chronically cool — the sensor was honestly reporting a real condition.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2011-2019 Ford 6.7L Power Stroke sees P0196 from the oil-cooler stack restriction that keeps oil running cooler than coolant under heavy load; sensor reads accurately but ECU rationality logic flags the gap. 2010-2018 BMW N20 / N55 / B58 turbo I6 throws P0196 from EOT sensor drift integrated into the oil-filter-housing assembly — the sensor's thermistor degrades over time and reports values that no longer match the calibration table. 2014-2019 GM 6.6L Duramax L5P sets P0196 from EOT range/performance after extended idling where oil temp lags coolant by more than the ECU's expected delta. 2008-2017 Subaru FA20 / FA20DIT turbo (WRX, Forester XT) sees P0196 from EOT sensor failure on the integrated oil-temp/pressure switch — the sensor and pressure switch share a housing and replacing one usually means replacing both. Estimated repair: $100 to $500.
