P0013

"B" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)

medium severitySafe to drive$80-$500

The exhaust camshaft phaser solenoid circuit on bank 1 has a fault.

Common symptoms

  • CEL
  • Rough idle
  • Loss of power
  • Reduced MPG

Likely causes

  • Failed exhaust cam OCV
  • Wiring/connector
  • Sludged oil

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed exhaust cam ocv.
  2. Cost & scope. $80-$500
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

Bank 1 EXHAUST camshaft position actuator circuit fault — same electrical fault tree as P0010, but on the exhaust cam OCV instead of intake. Applies only to engines with dual VVT (variable timing on both intake AND exhaust cams) — most modern Toyota Dual VVT-i, Ford 3V/4V, GM dual-VVT Ecotec, and most German engines. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Ohm the exhaust OCV solenoid — same 6.9-7.9 ohm spec on most Asian engines, 10-15 ohms on Ford. (2) Verify battery voltage at the OCV connector key-on, and PWM signal from PCM (1-99% duty cycle visible on scope). (3) Pull the OCV and inspect the screen — exhaust-side OCV screens collect MORE varnish than intake because exhaust cam oil runs hotter; cleaning the screen with brake cleaner is the first parts-free attempt. (4) Wiggle-test the harness at the connector and along the valve cover — exhaust OCV wires sit closer to the heat shield and chafe through. Don't replace the exhaust cam phaser on a P0013 — this is a circuit code, the phaser is innocent until P0014/P0015 sets.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2015 Toyota Camry/Highlander/Sienna 2GR-FE V6 — exhaust OCV solenoid harness pin corrosion is common, clean the terminals or repin with new ones. 2011-2016 Ford F-150 5.0L Coyote — exhaust OCV connector locks crack and back out, intermittent code with a tap on the connector reproduces it. 2010-2015 Hyundai Sonata/Santa Fe 2.4L Theta II — known exhaust OCV failure at 60-90k, replace solenoid. 2012-2018 GM 2.5L LCV Ecotec (Malibu, Equinox, Impala) — exhaust OCV wire chafes against the cam cover bolt, inspect harness routing. Estimated repair: $40 to $250.
