Cheapest first: check transmission fluid level and condition (warm, on level ground, engine running, in the manufacturer-specified gear); low fluid causes slip, and burned or dark fluid with a varnish smell indicates internal wear that no external fix will cure. Scan-tool the input and output speed sensors and verify both report plausible values during a road test; a failed input or output speed sensor will fake a slip code, and replacing the sensor for $80 is far cheaper than a transmission rebuild. Caveat: a true component-slipping code with verified speed sensors and clean fluid does mean internal damage, and continuing to drive a slipping transmission accelerates the damage exponentially.
