P0830

Clutch Pedal Switch "A" Circuit

low severitySafe to drive$50-$200

Manual-transmission clutch-pedal switch input fault.

Common symptoms

  • Cannot start (clutch interlock)
  • CEL
  • Cruise control inop

Likely causes

  • Failed switch
  • Mis-adjusted switch
  • Wiring

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed switch.
  2. Cost & scope. $50-$200
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

P0830 sets when the TCM or PCM cannot read a coherent state from clutch pedal position switch A, the upper or top-of-travel switch used on manual transmissions for cruise-control disengage, starter inhibit, and on hybrids for engine-restart logic. Start with the cheapest checks: verify the pedal returns fully to its rest stop (worn carpet edges and aftermarket floor mats are routine culprits), then unplug the switch and ohm it across the two signal pins while pressing the pedal slowly. A good A-switch reads open circuit (over 100 kilohms) pedal up and under 1 ohm pedal fully depressed, with a single clean transition; any double-click or chatter during the press is a failed switch. Caveat: many platforms share the A circuit with the brake-light or starter-relay logic, so a complaint of no-crank or cruise drop-out alongside P0830 points to the switch.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2013 BMW E90/E92 M3 with the rare 6-speed manual sees the upper clutch switch fail at around 60-80k miles, blocking the engine restart on iDrive-equipped cars and tripping P0830. 2011-2016 Ford Fiesta and 2014-2019 Focus ST manual transmissions have a plastic pedal-bracket tab that cracks and lets the switch float, generating an intermittent P0830 cured by bracket and switch together. 2010-2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6-speed throws P0830 when the switch internal contacts pit from repeated track-day launches. 2012-2018 VW Golf and GTI manuals (MQB platform) frequently log P0830 from a broken wire at the firewall grommet rather than a bad switch. Estimated repair: $90 to $320.
