P0881 sets when the TCM power input is electrically present but the voltage is out of the rationality window for the engine and ignition state, typically reading high during key-off or low during cranking beyond what the TCM expects. Cheapest first: confirm battery state-of-health with a conductance tester and verify charging-system output under load stays between 13.6V and 14.8V at idle. Scan-tool the TCM battery voltage PID and compare to the PCM battery voltage PID; a delta greater than 0.5V between the two modules indicates a ground or feed resistance specific to the TCM circuit. Caveat: a marginal battery that passes a static voltage check but fails under cranking load is the most common source of intermittent P0881.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2009-2014 Chrysler vehicles with TIPM-7 see P0881 from a sticking TCM relay that closes but exhibits high contact resistance. 2010-2016 GM with the 6L80 in stop/start-equipped trucks throws P0881 from auxiliary battery aging at 4-5 years. 2013-2018 Ram 1500 with the 8HP70 and BSG mild-hybrid system logs P0881 from DC/DC converter output droop. 2012-2017 BMW with the ZF 8HP and brake-energy regeneration sees P0881 when the intelligent battery sensor on the negative post fails. Estimated repair: $250 to $1400.
