OBD-II Code · Powertrain
P0880
Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0880)
See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- See deep dive
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
- Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0880 is a TCM ignition or power input signal fault, set when the TCM detects that its switched-power feed is present but does not match the expected state given key-on and engine-run inputs. Start with the absolute cheapest check: load-test the battery and verify alternator output between 13.8V and 14.6V at idle, because a weak battery is the single most common cause of TCM power codes on modern vehicles. Next, locate the TCM ignition-feed fuse (often a 15-20A in the underhood PDC or TIPM) and back-probe the TCM connector with key on; the feed should read battery voltage minus 0.2V or less, and should not droop below 11.0V during cranking. Caveat: on platforms with a smart power module (Chrysler TIPM, GM BCM-controlled TCM feed), the actual cause is often the upstream module not commanding the relay closed.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2014 Chrysler 300, Charger, Town & Country, and Grand Cherokee with the original TIPM-7 has a known internal relay failure on the TCM feed and is the highest-volume P0880 platform in North America; replacement TIPM or socketed-relay mod is the standard fix. 2008-2013 GM 6L80-equipped Silverado, Tahoe, and Camaro see P0880 from internal mechatronic (TEHCM) power-input circuit failure that requires mechatronic replacement. 2011-2016 Ford F-150 with the 6R80 throws P0880 from BCM-switched TCM power loss. 2009-2015 VW and Audi with the 09G or DQ250 DSG see P0880 from a cracked mechatronic connector sleeve letting ATF wick into the power pin. Estimated repair: $300 to $2600.
