P0835 sets when the PCM sees the Clutch Pedal Position Switch A signal staying inside an implausible voltage range — not fully open (0V) and not fully closed (battery V), but stuck somewhere in the middle, or transitioning so slowly that the PCM cannot determine pedal state. On a typical Ford or Honda manual the CPS A signal should snap from 0V to ~12-14V in under 100ms when the pedal is pressed; a signal that ramps slowly or hangs at 6-7V is a switch with pitted contacts arcing across the gap. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Backprobe the A-switch signal wire with a DMM in min/max mode and cycle the pedal ten times — record both extremes; anything that reads between 1V and 10V at either steady-state position is a failing switch. (2) Use a scope if available; the rising and falling edges should be near-vertical, not a slow ramp. A slow edge means the contacts are arcing and welding microscopically each cycle. (3) Inspect the pedal-bracket geometry — a bent bracket holds the switch plunger partially depressed at rest, putting the contacts in the arc zone. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: P0835 is the code that catches the half-failed switch that P0830 misses, and a shop that clears the code without verifying the switch waveform will see the customer back inside a week; the right move is replacing the switch the first time, not chasing PCM or wiring intermittents.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2014 Ford Mustang GT and 2011-2019 F-150 manual (the few that exist) throw P0835 from the same TR-3650/MT-82 pedal-bracket switch as P0830/P0833, just at a different point in the wear curve — the contacts arc before they open-circuit entirely. 2006-2011 Honda Civic Si K20Z3 throws P0835 from the clutch pedal position switch shifting position after years of pedal flex. 2008-2014 Subaru WRX/STI six-speed throws P0835 from the CPS losing range/performance after underbody moisture migrates into the switch body. 2010-2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS manual (TR6060) throws P0835 from a switch contact pitting issue that GM addressed under a customer-pay service campaign on affected VINs.
