Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0833)

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
  2. Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

P0833 is the lower clutch pedal position switch B fault, typically the bottom-of-travel switch used to confirm full disengagement for shift-lock release, hill-start hold, and on dual-clutch and AMT vehicles, the launch authorization logic. Cheapest diagnostic path: scan-tool the switch state while a helper presses the pedal slowly to the floor and watch for a clean transition near the bottom 15-20 percent of travel; the B switch should go from open to closed within the final inch of pedal stroke. Ohm-check the switch with the connector unplugged: spec is under 2 ohms closed at the floor and over 50 kilohms open at rest. Caveat: on DCT and AMT cars the B switch is a safety interlock, so the TCM may refuse all gear engagement when P0833 is active even if mechanical clutch action is normal.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2013 BMW E90/E92 M3 6-speed manual shows the lower switch fail more often than the upper, and the car will not start unless the pedal is double-pumped. 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 6-speed manual has a known striker-tab break that throws P0833 with no apparent symptom until cruise disengages. 2013-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic manuals have an integrated upper/lower switch assembly where the B contact fails first. 2015-2020 Subaru WRX 6-speed manual sees P0833 from a switch that loosens on its slotted mount after aggressive heel-toe footwork. Estimated repair: $110 to $360.
