P0820

P0820 is set by the TCM when the X-axis (left-right gate) and Y-axis (fore-aft gate) Hall sensors inside an electronic shifter disagree with each other or with the commanded park-lock state. This is a shift-by-wire code and almost never a mechanical linkage issue. Cheapest first: pull live data and watch the X and Y voltages while rocking the lever through every gate; healthy Hall pairs sit between 0.5V and 4.5V with no flat-line and no simultaneous rail-to-rail jump. Any channel that pegs at 0V or 5V, or that lags the other by more than 80ms during a gate change, is a failed sensor assembly. Check the shifter connector for bent pins and the 5V reference at the TCM. Caveat: on units with an integrated park-lock solenoid, a stuck solenoid plunger will physically prevent the Y-axis from reaching its Park detent and the code logs even though both sensors are electrically perfect.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2009-2014 BMW F01/F10 with the joystick-style electronic selector are notorious for internal Hall-sensor PCB failure, often after a battery disconnect, and require full shifter replacement (coded to VIN). 2010-2015 Mercedes W212 E-Class and W221 S-Class with the column-stalk DSP shifter (gear selector module N15/3) lose the X-channel first and ship a remanufactured unit. 2013-2018 Ram 1500 with the rotary e-shifter has a known TIPM-adjacent ground issue where G118 corrosion drops the 5V reference. 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee KL with the monostable shifter throws P0820 when the boot tears and road grit fouls the gate optics.
