Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0810)
See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.

Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
- Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0810 is a clutch position control error code, set when the PCM or TCM commands a clutch state (engagement or disengagement on automated manuals and dual-clutch transmissions) and the actual measured position does not match within the expected tolerance. Cheapest-first ladder: confirm the transmission type, because on a DSG, DCT, or PowerShift this code points to mechatronic or actuator faults that are very different from a conventional manual transmission diagnosis. Pull all transmission codes; P0810 almost always travels with companion codes. On a conventional manual, check clutch hydraulic fluid level and verify the slave cylinder is not leaking. On dual-clutch units, check transmission fluid level and condition (burned or low fluid causes mechatronic faults) before authorizing any internal repair. Caveat: replacing a DSG or PowerShift mechatronic unit costs $2,500 to $5,000 and is the most expensive misdiagnosis on this code; many P0810 conditions resolve with a fluid service and adaptation reset before any hardware is replaced.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2011 to 2016 Ford Fiesta and 2012 to 2016 Focus with the DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch transmission set P0810 as part of the widespread clutch-shudder and TCM failure pattern that became a Ford class-action settlement. 2009 to 2015 VW and Audi with the DSG (DQ250, DQ200, DQ500) trip P0810 from mechatronic solenoid wear or fluid contamination, often resolved with a fluid-and-filter service if caught early. 2007 to 2013 BMW M3 with the DCT and 2008 to 2015 Nissan GT-R set P0810 when clutch pack wear exceeds adaptation range. 2014 to 2019 Honda Fit and HR-V with the early CVT can show P0810 variants from start clutch slip. Estimated repair: $300 to $4,800.
