P0563 sets when system voltage at the PCM exceeds the high threshold, typically over 16.0 to 16.5 volts, indicating an overcharging condition or a stuck-open voltage regulator. Cheapest-first: measure battery voltage with engine at 2000 rpm. Anything over 15.0V sustained is genuine overcharge and will boil the battery within hours of driving. Most modern alternators have an internal regulator integrated with the brush holder; the field circuit can stick on if the PCM's field-control driver fails or if a sensor input the PCM uses for charge management (battery temperature sensor on GM, BCM-commanded setpoint on Ford and Chrysler) reports incorrectly. Verify the battery temp sensor's reading and resistance before condemning the alternator. On Chrysler vehicles, the PCM commands field duty cycle directly, so a PCM ground-circuit fault can drive 100 percent field and produce 17V output. Expensive misdiagnosis: replacing the alternator on a Ford or Chrysler when the real fault is a body control module or PCM ground drop.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2010 Dodge Charger, Magnum, and Chrysler 300 with the 5.7L Hemi have a known TIPM-driven overcharge fault that pushes voltage to 16+ volts; the TIPM bulletin covers many of these. 2004-2008 Ford F-150 5.4L 3-valve sees the smart-charge module misread battery temperature when its sensor wire chafes on the inner fender, commanding excessive field. 2007-2013 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 have intermittent body-control-module faults that command alternator setpoint to maximum, especially after a poor jump-start that surged the BCM. 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner V8 alternator internal regulator sticks on after 150K miles, producing genuine 15.5 to 16.5V output. Estimated repair: $150 to $720.
