P0471 is the range/performance variant of P0470 — the EBP sensor signal is in range electrically but doesn't track plausibly against engine load, turbo boost commanded, or expected back-pressure curves. The ECM cross-references EBP against MAF, MAP, commanded turbo vane position, and EGR duty cycle; when EBP fails to rise under load, stays elevated at idle, or lags transient throttle inputs, P0471 sets. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Datalog EBP voltage alongside MAP and commanded turbo position during a 15-minute warm drive — EBP should rise smoothly with load from 0.8V idle baseline to 2.5-3.5V under heavy acceleration on diesels (proportional to the 0-30 psi scale), or 1.0-2.0V on gas applications under load (proportional to 0-10 psi). (2) Flat or lagging EBP under load with healthy boost numbers means the sensor's pressure tube is partially clogged — soot accumulation on diesels is the #1 cause. (3) Elevated EBP at idle (above 1.5V on a diesel) with no load means actual exhaust restriction — DPF saturation, collapsed exhaust pipe, or stuck-shut variable-geometry turbo vanes. (4) Remove the sensor and clear the pressure tube with a stiff wire and compressed air; reinstall and recheck. (5) If the tube is clear and the sensor still reads implausibly, swap-test with a known-good unit before tearing further. Before condemning the EBP sensor, check whether the DPF has recently failed a regen cycle — a partially loaded DPF reads as elevated EBP and the ECM flags the sensor when the DPF is the actual culprit ($1,200 DPF service vs. $250 sensor swap that fixes nothing).

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke is the canonical P0471 — same soot-clogged EBP tube as P0470 but the sensor still reads partially, just lagging or biased low; the dual-tube delete kit is the permanent fix. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke shares the issue with the added complication of the regen-event EBP spike that ages the sensor faster. 2011-2016 Duramax LML throws P0471 from DPF saturation reading back to the EBP sensor as elevated baseline. 2007-2018 Duramax L5P sees the issue less frequently due to improved DPF management. 2007-2018 RAM Cummins 6.7L throws P0471 from soot-clogged tubes plus stuck variable-geometry turbo vanes creating real elevated back-pressure. 2009-2014 VW 2.0 TDI throws P0471 from a sensor that drifts after extended highway-only duty cycles (no regen events) loading the DPF. Estimated repair: $200 to $1,400 (depending on whether DPF service is needed).
