P0459
EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit High
Purge valve voltage high.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- Short to power
- Failed valve
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: short to power.
- Cost & scope. $100-$300
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.

P0459 means the ECM saw the EVAP purge valve control circuit pulled HIGH when it commanded LOW (or stuck high during the off cycle) — the purge solenoid is a PWM-driven valve on the engine side of the EVAP line, and the ECM monitors its driver feedback voltage to confirm the coil is actually toggling. Cheapest-first ladder on a shop floor: (1) Unplug the purge solenoid and ohm the coil across pins — a healthy solenoid reads 25-50 ohms typical at room temp (Bosch units run 22-30, Denso run 30-50, Continental run 26-35); open or infinite = burned coil, under 15 ohms = shorted winding. (2) Key-on, backprobe the solenoid connector and confirm 12V+ on the supply pin with ignition; the ECM pulls the ground side. (3) Command the purge solenoid ON with a bidirectional scan tool and watch current draw — healthy is 0.3-0.7A at 12V; over 1.0A means a shorted coil starting to fail, under 0.2A means a high-resistance connection. (4) Inspect the connector pins for water intrusion and the harness for chafe against the intake or A/C lines. Before condemning the purge solenoid, check the purge line itself for breaks/disconnections — Ford EcoBoost purge lines route over the intake and crack from heat soak, and a $5 vacuum hose fix saves a $400 solenoid replacement that won't clear the code.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2002-2010 Toyota Camry/Highlander/Sienna with the 1MZ-FE/2GR-FE V6 commonly throws P0459 from purge solenoid wiring chafe where the harness crosses the rear of the intake manifold — the insulation rubs through on the manifold bracket and shorts to ground intermittently, scope-confirm with a wiggle test. 2007-2014 GM Vortec V8 trucks/SUVs (Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban) throws P0459 because the canister and purge valve sit near the fuel filler on the frame rail and the connector corrodes from road salt and wheel splash — repin the connector before swapping the solenoid. 2004-2010 Ford F-150/Mustang 4.6L Triton frequently throws P0459 from cracked purge lines at the intake plenum where the rubber elbow meets the hard plastic line; the crack is hard to see and only opens up under engine heat. 2008-2013 Hyundai Sonata/Santa Fe with the Theta 2.4L throws P0459 from the purge solenoid sticking electrically after carbon canister overflow. Estimated repair: $80 to $400.
