P0469 means the ECM sees the purge flow sensor signal dropping in and out, glitching erratically, or producing implausibly fast voltage swings that can't be explained by actual vapor flow dynamics — intermittent signal loss is the hallmark. The trick with intermittents: they rarely fail during a static bench test, so the diagnostic has to catch the fault while it's actively occurring. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Datalog the purge flow sensor signal voltage with a scan tool over a 20-30 minute drive that includes idle, cruise, and load transitions — look for dropouts to 0V or spikes to 5V that don't correlate with commanded purge duty. (2) Wiggle-test the sensor connector and harness with the engine running while watching the live signal; any movement that triggers a voltage swing isolates the fault to that harness section. (3) Inspect the connector pins for spread terminals, green corrosion, or backed-out pins; a partially-retracted pin makes contact at rest but breaks under engine vibration. (4) Backprobe the 5V reference and ground at the sensor and look for noise/dropout — a flaky reference voltage from the ECM is rare but possible on high-mileage trucks. (5) Tap the sensor body lightly with a screwdriver handle while watching live data; an internally-failing sensor element will respond to vibration. Before condemning the purge flow sensor, check every chassis ground and engine ground strap with a voltage-drop test — a corroded G102 or G104 ground can scramble multiple sensor circuits simultaneously and P0469 is just the one that trips first ($15 grounding strap fix vs. $400 sensor + diag time).

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2013 Volvo S60/XC60/XC90 throws P0469 from connector pin fretting at the purge flow sensor — the harness clip loses tension and engine vibration breaks contact intermittently; the diagnostic giveaway is that the code only sets after extended highway driving when the harness has warmed and expanded. 2011-2016 Hyundai Sonata/Tucson GDI throws P0469 from a known intermittent solder joint failure inside the sensor itself — confirmed by Hyundai field-fix bulletins for affected production batches. 2012-2017 Kia Optima/Forte GDI shares the pattern. 2009-2014 Ford F-150 throws P0469 from harness chafe at the intake-to-firewall pass-through. 2010-2015 VW Jetta/Passat 2.0 TSI throws P0469 from internal sensor cracking after thermal cycling. Estimated repair: $160 to $520.
