P0465 means the ECM sees an EVAP purge flow sensor signal that's electrically present but outside the expected operating window — it's a circuit-level fault on the purge flow sensor (which is a MAF-style hot-wire or differential-pressure sensor sitting in the purge line between the carbon canister and the intake manifold, measuring the actual mass of fuel vapor being purged). Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Key-on-engine-off, backprobe the purge flow sensor signal wire — healthy sensors output 0.5-4.5V scaled at 0-100 g/sec of vapor flow; key-on with no flow should sit at ~0.5-1.0V (baseline). (2) With engine warm and purge commanded ON via scan tool, the signal should rise to 1.5-3.0V at idle purge rates and climb toward 4.0V under cruise/light-load purge. A signal stuck at 5V or 0V is a wiring fault, not a sensor fault. (3) Confirm 5V reference and ground at the sensor connector; corroded grounds are the #1 cause of phantom P0465 codes. (4) Pull the sensor and inspect the hot-wire element for oil/carbon fouling from canister overflow — a saturated element reads slow and lazy. Before condemning the purge flow sensor, check the purge line upstream and downstream for kinks, cracks, and disconnected hoses — Hyundai/Kia GDI engines route purge lines through tight bends near the intake and the rubber sections collapse internally; a $8 hose replacement fixes what looks like a $300 sensor.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2014 Volvo S60/S80/XC90 with the T6 inline-6 and 2.5T inline-5 commonly throws P0465 because Volvo routes purge vapor THROUGH the MAF housing on some platforms — a contaminated MAF reads the purge mass incorrectly and triggers P0465 even when the dedicated purge sensor is healthy; clean the MAF first. 2011-2016 Hyundai Sonata/Tucson/Santa Fe with the Theta II 2.4L GDI throws P0465 frequently because purge flow is critical for GDI carbon management and the sensor is calibrated tighter than on port-injection peers — Hyundai issued multiple TSBs for harness routing and sensor recalibration. 2010-2014 Kia Optima/Sorento GDI shares the Theta II issues. 2008-2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L throws P0465 from purge line kinks at the intake routing. Estimated repair: $120 to $450.
