P0383 means the glow-plug control circuit is reading LOW — either the control module is commanding the glow plug bus on but the voltage at the bus is below the expected battery-voltage threshold during the wait-to-start cycle, or the current draw on the bus is below the floor the module expects to see for a healthy bank. On a 12V system the bus should sit at 11.5-13.8 V during glow operation; on a 24V medium-duty system, at 22-26 V. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) backprobe the glow-plug bus bar with a DMM while keying-on cold and verify the actual voltage during the 5-30 second wait-to-start interval (timer length depends on coolant temp — 30 seconds at 0 F, near-zero above 95 F). (2) Measure current on the bus with a clamp meter — a typical 4-cylinder diesel glow system pulls 28-80 A total at initial engagement (7-20 A per plug), and current under 5 A confirms either an open bus or a dead module output. (3) Disconnect each plug and ohm them individually — 0.4-2.0 ohms healthy, infinity = open. An open plug doesn't cause low-circuit reading on its own (it just drops total current), but a corroded bus-bar joint between plugs adds resistance that reads as 'low voltage at the far plug' and trips P0383. (4) Verify the GPCM ground — a poor ground drops the high-side voltage measurement and reads as a low-circuit fault. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: before replacing the GPCM for a P0383, check the glow plug RESISTANCE individually and the bus-bar torque — a corroded eyelet on the bus bar adds 0.3-0.5 ohms of series resistance that the module reads as low voltage, the controller is fine, and replacing it without cleaning the bus-bar terminations means the new module sets P0383 within a week.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke is the most common P0383 ticket — the GPCM's internal MOSFETs short to ground intermittently after thermal cycling, and the module reads its own pulled-down output as 'low circuit'; the fix is a remanufactured controller plus a full plug R&R since the population is usually due. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke throws P0383 from cracked bus-bar terminations between cylinders 5-6-7-8 (the rear bank sees more heat). 2001-2010 GM Duramax LB7-LMM throws P0383 from corroded engine-block ground straps that drop GPCM reference. 2010-2015 VW 2.0 TDI (Jetta, Golf, Passat, Q5) uses a 4-plug pack and a single low-side module; P0383 typically points to a single internally-shorted plug pulling the bus voltage down during pre-heat. 2007-2014 Mercedes Sprinter OM642 mounts the glow-plug module on the PDC (pre-fuse box) and throws P0383 from water intrusion at the module connector. Estimated repair: $150 to $850.
