P0361

Ignition Coil K Primary/Secondary Circuit

high severitySafe to drive$200-$8,500

Cylinder 11 coil fault — V12 engines only.

Common symptoms

  • Misfire cyl 11
  • CEL
  • Reduced power

Likely causes

  • Failed COP
  • Heat-soak batch failure

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed cop.
  2. Cost & scope. $200-$8,500
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

P0361 is the cylinder 11 ignition coil primary/secondary circuit fault — V12 engines only (BMW N73/N74 7-Series and Rolls-Royce, Mercedes M275/M279 S-Class and AMG, Ferrari V12s, Lamborghini Aventador V12, Aston Martin V12, Jaguar/Daimler V12, Audi W12 — though the W12 numbers cylinders by W layout, it can also throw codes 1-12). Cylinder 11 location: on BMW N73/N74 V12 it's bank 2 (cylinders 7-12) fifth position, on Mercedes M275/M279 V12 it's bank 2 fifth position, on Ferrari V12 (F140 family in 599/F12/812) it's bank 2 toward the rear, on Lamborghini Aventador L539 V12 it's bank 2 toward the rear, on Audi W12 it depends on the W6+W6 layout convention. Cheapest-first diagnostic: swap the cylinder 11 coil with a known-good same-part-number coil from a front-bank position, clear codes, run a drive cycle. Code follows = coil replacement (V12 coils run $80-$400 each OE). Code stays at cylinder 11 = trigger wire integrity check, B+ feed verification (12.0-12.6V static, 13.5-14.5V running), ground voltage drop under 0.1V, scope the ECM trigger pulse. On any V12 platform, single-coil failure on a high-mileage car is essentially always the leading edge of a full-set failure pattern — Bosch and Eldor coils across BMW N74, Mercedes M275, and Lamborghini L539 all age in batches.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2009-2019 BMW 760Li N74 6.0L twin-turbo V12 / Rolls-Royce Ghost-Phantom N74B66 cylinder 11 P0361 from Bosch coil failure — N74 service requires removing the entire engine cover assembly to access bank 2 rear, and BMW SI covers full-set replacement at any failure above 60K miles. 2006-2013 Mercedes S600/CL600/SL600 M275 5.5L V12 BiTurbo cylinder 11 P0361 — coils sit under massive engine covers, full-set replacement plus coil-on-plug boots is standard at this failure point. 2012-2021 Lamborghini Aventador L539 6.5L V12 cylinder 11 P0361 — full powertrain access requires removing the rear engine bay glass and cover ($1,200-$2,500 labor before parts); coils are Bosch, OE only. 2012-2017 Ferrari F12berlinetta / 2017-2024 812 Superfast F140 V12 cylinder 11 P0361 — Ferrari authorized service only on warranty cars; coils are Magneti Marelli OE. Estimated repair: $200 (single coil on M275 done easy) to $8,500+ (Aventador full coil set with labor).
