P0364 is a reserved generic-OBD code in the SAE J2012 misfire-detection range that some manufacturers use for cylinder 11 misfire on V10 and large-displacement diesel applications, while others leave it unused or use it for misfire-detection circuit faults. The code is rarely seen in general repair because it only exists in active form on engines with 11 or more cylinders — primarily the Dodge/Ram 8.3L Viper V10, the Ford 6.8L Triton V10, the VW W12, and certain large-displacement diesel V10/V12s with cylinder-specific glow plug detection circuits that overlap into the misfire range. Cheapest-first ladder for the V10 misfire interpretation: (1) Verify the OEM's actual code definition before spending any time — Ford 6.8L V10 uses P0311 for cylinder 11 misfire on most calibrations, while some aftermarket scanners mis-translate the code. (2) If genuine cylinder-11 misfire, apply the standard misfire flow (plug read, coil swap to an adjacent cylinder on the same bank, plug swap, compression test). (3) If the manufacturer uses P0364 for a glow plug circuit fault on cyl 11, check the glow plug resistance (typically 0.5-2.0 ohms at room temp) and the GPCM's per-cylinder driver output. Target thresholds: misfire counts <50/1000 rev normal, glow plug resistance 0.5-2.0 ohms cold. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: because this code is reserved and OEM usage varies, a generic code-definition lookup will steer the wrong way half the time — always pull the OEM-specific service information for the exact VIN before quoting any repair, or you'll spend an afternoon chasing a misfire on an engine that doesn't have an 11th cylinder.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2005 Ford E-350/F-250/F-350/Excursion with the 6.8L Triton V10 is the primary platform where P0364 might appear in shop work — usually as a misread of P0311 (cyl 11 misfire) by an older scan tool; cyl 11 on this engine is the rear-most cylinder on the right bank and suffers the same coil-boot carbon tracking and stuck-plug issues as the 5.4L 3V Triton family. 2003-2006 Dodge Viper with the 8.3L V10 throws P0364 from cylinder-specific coil-pack failures; the COP coils are sourced uniquely and run $200+ each. Large-displacement industrial diesels (Detroit Diesel, MTU, Mercedes OM621-family) occasionally use P0364 for glow plug 11 circuit faults — these are rare in light-duty repair shops and almost always come into specialty diesel shops. VW W12 (Phaeton, Bentley Continental) uses different code ranges and won't show P0364. Estimated repair: $80 (single coil + extended labor on a Triton V10) to $1,500+ (specialty diesel glow plug harness on an industrial engine).
