P0363 sets when the PCM's misfire-detection logic has counted misfires above the catalyst-damage threshold and the catalyst-protection strategy has shut down fuel injection on the offending cylinder(s) — this is a software feature, not a hardware fault by itself. The PCM counts crankshaft-deceleration events per cylinder per 1000-rev window: under ~50 misfires per 1000 revs is normal background noise, 50-200 sets a P030X cylinder-specific code, and over 200 trips the cat-damage threshold and forces the PCM to cut fuel to that cylinder to prevent unburned hydrocarbons from melting the catalytic converter. So P0363 is a symptom of an underlying active misfire, not a standalone fault. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Pull freeze-frame data and identify WHICH cylinder triggered the shutdown — there will almost always be a paired P030X code (P0301-P0312). (2) Diagnose the underlying misfire using the standard misfire flow (read the plug, swap the coil to an adjacent cylinder, swap the plug, compression test, injector flow test). (3) Inspect the catalytic converter for heat damage from the misfire event — a cat that's been hammered by raw fuel will rattle and back-pressure test high. Target thresholds: <50 misfires/1000 rev normal, 200+ trips shutdown. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: clearing P0363 without finding the underlying misfire cause means the next drive cycle will trip it again AND it may have already cooked the cat — always inspect cat condition (back-pressure test under 1.5 psi at 2500 RPM) before delivering the vehicle, or the $40 coil fix becomes a $1,200 callback.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2014 Ford F-150/Expedition 5.4L 3V Triton is a frequent P0363 victim because the left-bank cylinder-specific misfires from cam-phaser rattle and stuck plugs trip the catalyst-protection threshold quickly — Ford's misfire-detection on this platform is aggressive. 2008-2013 BMW N54 (335i, 535i, X6) throws P0363 when an injector index-code mismatch or a failing HPFP causes severe misfires above the damage threshold; BMW's MSD80/MSD81 ECU is unusually quick to invoke catalyst protection. 2005-2010 Chrysler 5.7L Hemi sets P0363 when a failed MDS lifter causes a hard hydraulic misfire that exceeds the threshold within 200-300 miles of the lifter collapse. 2010-2015 Hyundai/Kia Theta II 2.0T/2.4L throws P0363 from connecting-rod-bearing failure-induced misfires that precede full engine failure — when a Theta II throws P0363 with no obvious coil/plug cause, listen for rod knock before quoting any repair. Estimated repair: $40 (single coil) to $4,500+ (full engine replacement on a Theta II).
