Powertrain Diagnostic Code (P0260)
See deep dive below for full diagnostic context.
Common symptoms
- CEL
Likely causes
- See deep dive
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: see deep dive.
- Cost & scope. $50-$2,000
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0260 indicates a fault in the pedal position switch B circuit, part of the redundant accelerator pedal sensor system used to cross-check throttle inputs against the main pedal position sensor. Cheapest first: verify the pedal connector is fully seated and free of floor-mat fluid intrusion. With key on, engine off, watch the scan-tool pedal position B PID through full pedal travel; a properly functioning sensor sweeps roughly 0.5V at rest to 2.0-2.3V at wide-open throttle on most domestic applications (about half the voltage range of sensor A, which is the intentional redundancy design). Flat-lined, jumpy, or out-of-range readings condemn the pedal assembly. The expensive misdiagnosis is replacing the throttle body ($300-$600) when the fault is upstream at the pedal.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2010 Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger pedal assembly suffers internal track wear and throws P0260 alongside P0220 (TSB 18-024-09); 2008-2013 GM Silverado/Sierra 1500 APP sensor connector corrodes from cab air infiltration; 2007-2012 Nissan Altima/Sentra pedal assembly is a known wear item with Nissan extended-warranty bulletin NTB10-014; 2010-2015 Hyundai Sonata APP sensor B fails after coffee or beverage spills through the carpet into the connector. Estimated repair: $180 to $520.
