P0253 means the injection pump fuel metering control 'A' circuit signal is pinned low — the ECM is reading near 0V on the SCV/FCA feedback or command verification path, which points at a short-to-ground, an open circuit, or a failed solenoid winding. Unlike P0252 (performance) which is a hydraulic problem, P0253 is almost always electrical. The diagnostic order is straightforward: (1) Unplug the SCV/FCA connector and inspect for fuel migration, green corrosion, and pin push-back — diesel fuel wicks up the harness and corrodes pins long before the solenoid winding fails. (2) Ohm the SCV coil — Bosch CP3 SCV reads 1.5-3 ohm; Bosch CP4 SCV reads 2-5 ohm; Denso suction control valves read 2-5 ohm; an open reading (OL) confirms a broken winding, near-zero resistance confirms a shorted winding, both condemn the valve at $150-400. (3) Back-probe the harness connector key-on and confirm the 12V supply side and the ECM PWM driver side with a DVOM and scope — a missing supply points at a blown fuel-system fuse or harness fault upstream of the solenoid. (4) Wiggle-test the harness from the ECM connector to the SCV under live scan-data; intermittent dropouts confirm a chafe or break in the loom, common where the harness routes near the high-pressure pump bracket and rubs metal. (5) If the solenoid ohms good and harness is intact, the fault is inside the ECM driver — but this is rare and should be a last resort after confirming all of the above. Live-data the commanded SCV duty cycle: it will typically read 0% or 100% pinned with a P0253 active because the ECM has lost the feedback loop. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: do not replace the high-pressure pump on a P0253 — the code is electrical on the metering solenoid, not a pump mechanical fault, and many platforms allow the SCV to be replaced without pump removal for $150-400 vs. the $2,000-3,500 pump swap.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2001-2010 GM Duramax LB7/LLY/LBZ/LMM throws P0253 from FCA harness chafe at the back of the CP3 pump where the loom touches the engine cover bracket — a $30 pigtail repair plus dielectric grease in the connector resolves it. 2003-2018 RAM Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L throws P0253 from fuel-saturated SCV connectors where rail-pressure sensor weeping has migrated up the loom; clean and re-pin, or replace the pigtail. 2011-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke throws P0253 less often than mechanical CP4 codes but does see it from harness damage in the valley area, particularly after EGR cooler or DPF service where the loom can be pinched on reassembly. 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke throws P0253 on the CP3.3 SCV harness from heat damage near the EGR cooler. 2009-2014 VW TDI 2.0L CR throws P0253 from CP4 SCV (G-749) winding failure and from harness chafe near the cam cover. 2007-2018 Mercedes Sprinter OM642 throws P0253 from the quantity control valve harness on the Bosch CP3 — corrosion is the common cause on salt-belt vans.
