P0035
Turbocharger Bypass Valve Control Circuit High
Bypass solenoid circuit high voltage.
Common symptoms
- CEL
- Boost issues
Likely causes
- Open circuit
- Failed solenoid
- PCM driver
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: open circuit.
- Cost & scope. $150-$700
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
P0035 is the 'circuit high' version of the turbo/supercharger bypass valve control fault - the control signal is stuck above the upper electrical threshold, typically above 4.5V on a low-side driver with shorted-to-power conditions, or with current draw indicating the circuit is shorted to battery voltage. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Unplug the BPV and DMM the control wire to ground with key on - a stuck-high signal with the valve disconnected confirms the harness is shorted to battery voltage somewhere between PCM and valve; if the signal falls to zero when disconnected, the valve itself has an internal short to power. (2) Inspect the harness route for chafing against a hot or live wire bundle - a chafed control wire that touches a 12V circuit produces exactly this fault. (3) Confirm the solenoid resistance is within spec (12-30 ohms) - a partially shorted internal coil drops resistance and can pull more current than the driver expects. Expensive-misdiagnosis trap: replacing a PCM on a P0035 when the actual fault is harness-side and the PCM has correctly protected itself by reporting the high-current condition.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2009-2015 VW / Audi 2.0T TSI throws P0035 alongside P0034 on alternating drive cycles as a marginal diverter valve solenoid varies between open and shorted. 2011-2017 Ford Explorer / Edge / Taurus SHO with the 3.5L EcoBoost throws P0035 from chafed BPV harness near the intercooler bracket. 2010-2016 Subaru WRX / Forester XT with the EJ255 throws P0035 from a failed turbo recirculation valve. 2013-2018 Hyundai Veloster Turbo / Sonata 2.0T with the Theta II turbo throws P0035 from a known supplier-defective electronic BPV. Estimated repair: $90 to $400
