P0034

Turbocharger Bypass Valve Control Circuit Low

medium severitySafe to drive$150-$700

Bypass solenoid circuit low voltage.

Common symptoms

  • CEL
  • Boost issues

Likely causes

  • Short to ground
  • Failed solenoid

Where to start

  1. Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: short to ground.
  2. Cost & scope. $150-$700
  3. If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure

P0034 is the 'circuit low' version of the turbo/supercharger bypass valve control fault - the control signal is stuck below the lower electrical threshold, typically below 0.25V or with no current draw detected through the solenoid. The fault is electrical: a shorted-to-ground wire, a dead solenoid coil that's open, or a PCM driver-side issue. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Unplug the BPV and DMM the harness control wire to ground with key on - a stuck-low signal with the valve disconnected confirms a short-to-ground in the harness between PCM and valve; if the signal floats up to battery voltage when disconnected, the valve coil is open. (2) Check the solenoid resistance pin-to-pin - open circuit (OL) means the coil winding is burned out internally. (3) Inspect the connector for green/white corrosion - boost-side components live in oily, heat-cycled environments and connectors that look clean often have hidden corrosion under the seals. The full sequence takes 15 minutes with a DMM and isolates harness-vs-valve before any parts are ordered.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2014 VW / Audi 2.0T TSI throws P0034 from a failed diverter valve solenoid - the original-spec valves have a known coil-failure pattern, and the upgraded part number is the durable fix. 2010-2016 Ford F-150 / Edge / Lincoln MKS with the 3.5L EcoBoost throws P0034 from chafed BPV control wiring at the engine-bay harness clip near the firewall. 2007-2013 Mazda CX-7 with the 2.3L DISI turbo throws P0034 from a failed turbo bypass solenoid. 2011-2018 BMW N20 / N26 2.0L turbo (320i, 528i, X1, X3) throws P0034 from a failed wastegate-related solenoid. Estimated repair: $80 to $350
