OBD-II Code · Chassis
C0035
Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
ABS wheel speed sensor fault on left front.
Common symptoms
- ABS warning light
- Traction control warning
- Speedometer may be affected
Likely causes
- Failed WSS
- Damaged tone ring
- Wiring
- Metal debris on sensor
Where to start
- Try the cheapest cause first. Start by checking: failed wss.
- Cost & scope. $150-$400
- If the code returns after the fix: escalate to a shop or scanner with live-data and freeze-frame. A code that re-sets means the underlying fault is still there.
Read the full diagnostic procedure
C0035 indicates a fault in the left front wheel speed sensor (WSS) circuit, which the EBCM uses to compare wheel velocities for ABS, traction control, and stability intervention. Start with the free stuff: clear the code, drive a 5-mile loop with at least one stop from 25 mph, and watch whether C0035 returns as current or stays in history — intermittent codes are usually wiring or magnet contamination, hard codes are usually the sensor itself. Next, pull the wheel and inspect the sensor face for metal shavings stuck to the magnet (a fuzzy gray beard means a worn bearing is shedding into the sensor); clean it with brake cleaner and a plastic pick, never a screwdriver. With a scan tool, watch live data: at a steady 20 mph the LF wheel speed should match the other three within 1 mph, and the signal should rise linearly from 0 with no dropouts. Cold-ohm the sensor at the connector — passive (variable reluctance) sensors read 1,000 to 2,500 ohms typical, while active Hall-effect sensors show roughly 5V key-on reference and a 1.4V to 1.6V quiescent on the signal wire. Skipping this $0 inspection and throwing a $180 sensor at it is the classic expensive misdiagnosis: half the time the real fault is a corroded connector at the strut tower, a rodent-chewed harness behind the fender liner, or a damaged tone ring on the CV joint that looks fine until you spin it slowly by hand.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2007-2014 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra 1500 — front WSS harness chafes on the upper control arm bracket, GM TSB PIT5363 covers the repair with a protective loom. 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner — the tone ring on the front hub is integral to the bearing, and any C0035/C0040 with a slight bearing growl means the hub assembly is done, not the sensor. 2011-2016 Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty — the LF WSS connector behind the dust shield fills with road salt slurry and corrodes the terminals green; Ford TSB 14-0104 specifies the updated sealed connector pigtail. 2008-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 — magnet face attracts brake-dust ferrous particles after pad changes, a 60-second clean fixes 80% of cases. Estimated repair: $0 to $650.
