B2603 on Ford applications is an IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control) actuator range/performance code that also surfaces as a body-side memory mismatch when the PCM and BCM disagree on the expected IMRC configuration for the calibration loaded. The actuator is either physically out of range (stuck linkage, broken plastic plate inside the manifold) or the module's expected position table doesn't match the hardware. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Pull the IMRC actuator off the intake manifold and check the linkage rotation by hand — if the plates inside the manifold are seized with carbon or the plastic shaft has snapped (extremely common on 4.6L/5.4L Tritons past 100k miles), the actuator is fine but the manifold internals are the problem. (2) Scan IMRC commanded vs. actual position live data; commanded 100% with actual stuck at 0-15% is a mechanical bind, commanded and actual tracking but the code still setting is a calibration/configuration mismatch. (3) Verify the PCM and BCM As-Built data using FORScan — a PCM swap or BCM swap that didn't carry the original IMRC configuration through to the new module throws B2603 immediately. (4) Replace the actuator itself ($80-$180 part) only after confirming the linkage rotates freely. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: replacing the IMRC actuator on a Triton with seized manifold plates only kills the new actuator within a few thousand miles — the plates must be freed or the manifold replaced.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2004-2010 Ford F-150/Expedition/Mustang with the 4.6L or 5.4L 3-valve Triton is the classic B2603 ticket — the plastic IMRC plates inside the intake manifold carbon up, the plastic shaft snaps, and the broken plates can rattle into the cylinder head and cause catastrophic damage; many shops preemptively delete the IMRC system with an aftermarket eliminator plate kit. 2007-2011 Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX and 2009-2014 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L/3.7L Cyclone V6 throws B2603 from a different IMRC layout — the V6 IMRCs use vacuum actuators and the rubber diaphragms degrade around 80k miles; replacement is straightforward. 2005-2008 Mustang GT 4.6L 3V throws B2603 commonly enough that aftermarket intake manifolds (Edelbrock, Trickflow) that delete the IMRC system are popular cures. 2003-2007 Lincoln Town Car and Crown Victoria 4.6L 2V occasionally throws B2603 when a junkyard PCM swap loaded a calibration that expected IMRC hardware the donor vehicle didn't have. Estimated repair: $180 (actuator-only DIY) to $1,400 (full intake manifold replacement plus reconfiguration on a Triton).
