P3410 means the ECM commanded cylinder 3 to deactivate and the performance feedback didn't match. Cheapest-first ladder: confirm cylinder numbering and bank assignment for your specific platform before pulling any solenoid (Chrysler Hemi: cyl 3 driver's side, Honda J35 transverse: cyl 3 rear bank, GM LS-based V8: cyl 3 driver's side rear) — the wrong solenoid swap wastes an hour and leaves the actual fault in place. Ohm the cylinder-3 MDS/AFM solenoid (8 to 15 ohms cold), backprobe the harness for the ECM's 0.5 to 1.5A activation pulse, and scan oil pressure at the deactivation gallery during a commanded event (25 to 65 psi at 1500+ rpm minimum for clean lifter collapse). Watch the cylinder-3 misfire counter during the deactivation window — zero contribution is healthy, any spike means partial lifter collapse. On Honda J35 platforms specifically, scan the VTC (variable timing control) oil pressure feedback — clean rocker-arm reactivation needs 50+ psi at the VTC actuator, and dropping below that strands the cylinder in a half-deactivated state that throws P3410 plus misfire codes simultaneously. The expensive misdiagnosis: Chrysler 5.7/6.4 Hemi MDS lifters are the actual problem on 80% of P3400-P3424 codes — collapsed cylinder-3 lifter loses valve actuation entirely and presents identically to a dead solenoid, but pulling the valve cover and physically inspecting the lifter is the only way to confirm. Replacing solenoids without verifying lifters fixes only 20% of cases.

GM AFM 5.3L L83 (Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban 2014+), 6.0L (Avalanche/Yukon XL), and 6.2L L86/L87 (Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon 2014+) throws cylinder-3 AFM codes during the AFM oil-pressure-relief-valve failure pattern — gallery pressure drops, lifters partially collapse, and the ECM sees an inconsistent deactivation event. Ford 5.0L Coyote VCT-i (Mustang GT, F150) throws VCT-equivalent codes on cylinder 3 when oil change intervals stretch past 7,500 miles and the phaser screen clogs.
