P3404 means the ECM detects the cylinder-1 deactivation/intake-valve-control solenoid circuit pulled high when it shouldn't be — either the harness is shorted to battery voltage, the solenoid driver in the ECM has failed in the open-state and the pull-up resistor is pinning the line high, or the connector has corrosion bridging signal to power. Cheapest-first ladder: disconnect the solenoid and check for battery voltage on both pins with the ignition on — only one pin should see B+ during the activation pulse; if both pins read B+ continuously, the harness is shorted to a power source. Ohm the solenoid across the two pins — healthy is 8 to 15 ohms cold; high resistance (above 20 ohms) can present as a circuit-high code because the ECM driver can't pull the line down through a high-impedance load. Inspect the connector for green corrosion (oil + moisture intrusion is the Hemi MDS signature) and the harness for melted or chafed insulation near the exhaust manifold heat shield. Backprobe with the engine running and watch the signal voltage during a commanded deactivation — should swing from B+ to near-zero during the pulse; stuck-high means the ECM can't sink current. The expensive misdiagnosis: Chrysler 5.7/6.4 Hemi MDS lifters are the actual problem on 80% of P3400-P3424 codes, but P3404 specifically is a wiring/ECM-driver fault on virtually every case — chasing a lifter on a true P3404 is a four-hour valve-cover detour to nowhere.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: Chrysler 5.7L Hemi (RAM 1500 2009-current, Charger/Challenger R/T 2005-current, Grand Cherokee, Durango, 300C) sets P3404 on cylinder 1 most often when the MDS connector at the solenoid corrodes from oil-mist intrusion and bridges the signal pin to the power pin — clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner, repack with dielectric grease, often $5 in parts. 6.4L Hemi SRT (392 Charger/Challenger, Grand Cherokee SRT, Durango SRT) shares the failure mode. GM AFM 5.3L L83 (Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban 2014+), 6.0L (Avalanche/Yukon XL), and 6.2L L86/L87 (Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon 2014+) sets circuit-high codes when the LOM harness melts against the exhaust manifold heat shield — common on trucks that have done extended towing. Ford 5.0L Coyote VCT-i (Mustang GT, F150) rarely sets a true P3404 but throws VCT-equivalent high-circuit codes when the ECM internal driver fails; ECM replacement runs $800-$1,400 and is the only fix once the driver is gone. Honda VCM J35 V6 (Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, Accord V6) sets ROCV high-circuit codes from similar oil-intrusion mechanisms; VCM disable harness at ~$120 sidesteps the problem entirely. Estimated repair: $5 (connector cleanup) to $1,400 (ECM replacement).
