P3401 means the ECM commanded cylinder 1 to deactivate (collapse the intake lifter, hold the valve closed) and the performance feedback didn't match the expected pattern — the cylinder either didn't deactivate when commanded, or didn't reactivate cleanly when the ECM exited fuel-saver mode. Cheapest-first ladder: pull the MDS/AFM solenoid for cylinder 1 and ohm it across the two pins — healthy reading is 8 to 15 ohms cold, anything open or shorted condemns the solenoid for $40 to $120 OEM. Backprobe the harness while running and confirm the ECM commands a 0.5 to 1.5A current pulse during the deactivation event; missing current pulse means ECM driver or wiring, present pulse with no deactivation means mechanical. Scan oil pressure at the deactivation gallery — sub-25 psi at idle or sub-45 psi at 2000 rpm starves the lifter of the hydraulic pressure it needs to collapse, and the ECM sees the lifter never actually deactivated. Watch the cylinder-1 misfire counter during a commanded deactivation cycle — a healthy deactivation reads ZERO contribution (the cylinder is effectively a spring), and any misfire count means the lifter partially collapsed or failed to reactivate cleanly. The expensive misdiagnosis: Chrysler 5.7/6.4 Hemi MDS lifters are the actual problem on 80% of P3400-P3424 codes — a collapsed lifter loses valve actuation entirely and mimics every symptom of a failed solenoid, but the only real fix is pulling the valve cover, removing the lifter, and confirming whether the roller seized or the internal lock pin failed. Replacing the solenoid on a failed-lifter engine clears the code for 50-200 miles then returns it.

Vehicle-specific patterns: Chrysler 5.7L Hemi (RAM 1500 2009-current, Charger/Challenger R/T 2005-current, Grand Cherokee, Durango, 300C) throws P3401 most often when the cylinder-1 lifter is the first to fail in the MDS rotation — cylinder 1 sits at the front of the driver's-side bank and runs the longest oil-feed gallery, so it's typically the lifter that starves first on a worn oil pump. 6.4L Hemi SRT (392 Charger/Challenger, Grand Cherokee SRT, Durango SRT) sees the same cylinder-1 lifter failure but accelerated by the higher-rpm power band. GM 5.3L AFM L83 (Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban 2014+), 6.0L (Avalanche/Yukon XL), and 6.2L L86/L87 (Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon 2014+) throws cylinder-specific AFM codes when individual lifters collapse — GM's AFM-delete kit with a non-AFM cam and standard lifters runs $1,800-$3,200 installed and is the only permanent fix. Ford 5.0L Coyote VCT-i (Mustang GT, F150) throws related VCT performance codes when the cylinder-1 cam phaser locks up from oil sludge. Honda VCM J35 V6 (Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, Accord V6) doesn't typically set generic P3401 but throws cylinder-1 misfires during VCM reactivation when VTC oil pressure drops below 50 psi — the VCM disable harness at ~$120 is the common shop fix. Hemi lifter + roller cam rebuild runs $2,500-$4,500 parts + 12-16 hr labor. Estimated repair: $40 to $4,500.
