P2705 is the apply-time monitor on Friction Element F — the sixth and final independently monitored clutch or band in the gearset. By the time a trans has six monitored elements, you're in 8-speed territory (ZF 8HP, Aisin AS69RC) or 10-speed (Ford 10R80, GM 10L80/10L90) territory, and the monitoring is sophisticated enough that the TCM is checking both apply time and release time for each element on every shift event. Same logic: 350-500 ms target window, 700-1000 ms fault threshold. Cheapest-first ladder: verify fluid (level, color, smell — burned fluid alone explains most P27xx codes regardless of element number); capture turbine/output RPM data during the failing shift on a bidirectional scanner; mechanical line-pressure test at idle (60-90 psi DRIVE) and WOT (180-260 psi commanded); scope the PCS feeding Element F for coil integrity (8-30 ohms cold) and drive current (0.5-1.5 A nominal); confirm hydraulic dwell at apply (200-400 ms typical between command and measured RPM convergence). On 10-speeds specifically, watch for cross-leak between adjacent solenoid circuits at the lead-frame — a single bad insulator can throw two element codes simultaneously. Caveat: friction-element apply-time codes mean internal hydraulic delay — solenoid is cheapest, valve-body sealing rings and bore wear is medium, worn clutch packs is expensive. Always pressure-test BEFORE teardown; $400+ in labor before any teardown parts are even sourced.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2017+ Ford 10R80 in F-150, Mustang, Bronco, and Expedition sees P2705 most often from the same lead-frame cross-leak that produces P2704 — Ford issued multiple calibration updates between 2017 and 2020 to widen the monitor windows on early-build units. 2017+ GM 10L80/10L90 (Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon, Camaro ZL1) shares about 80% of its architecture with the 10R80 (jointly developed program) and shows similar P2705 patterns at the F element. 2014+ ZF 8HP70/8HP75 throws P2705 from F-clutch wear when fluid service is skipped past 60-80k miles. 2013+ Aisin AS69RC behind the Cummins 6.7L (Ram 2500/3500) throws P2705 in heavy-tow service when the F element (Aisin's mapping varies) experiences sustained heat soak. Mercedes 7G-Tronic 722.9 in its later evolutions throws P2705 from conductor-plate failures cascading across multiple solenoid circuits. Estimated repair: $400 to $6,000.
