P2704 is the apply-time monitor on Friction Element E, which only exists on transmissions with 5+ independently monitored elements — so 6-speeds with full element-by-element monitoring (Ford 6R80, GM 6L80/6L90, ZF 6HP variants), 8-speeds (ZF 8HP, Aisin AS69RC, Mercedes 7G-Tronic 722.9 in 8-speed evolutions), and 10-speeds (Ford 10R80, GM 10L80/10L90). TCM logic is unchanged: 350-500 ms target apply window, 700-1000 ms fault threshold. Cheapest-first ladder: fluid first (level, color, smell — burned fluid is the single biggest root-cause vector for P27xx codes); live-data capture of turbine vs output RPM during the failing shift; mechanical line-pressure check at idle (60-90 psi DRIVE) and WOT (180-260 psi commanded depending on application); then scope the PCS feeding Element E (8-30 ohm coil cold, 0.5-1.5 A drive). On 8-speeds and 10-speeds, the internal harness routing means a single chafed conductor at the case pass-through can mimic a failed solenoid — back-probe at the case connector before pulling the pan. Caveat: friction-element apply-time codes mean internal hydraulic delay — solenoid is cheapest, valve-body sealing rings + bore wear is medium, worn clutch packs is expensive. Pressure-test BEFORE teardown; pulling the pan + valve body costs $400+ in labor before parts.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2017+ Ford 10R80 (F-150 EcoBoost, Mustang GT, Bronco) sees P2704 most often on early-build trans before Ford updated the calibration in 2019 — TSB-driven recalibration cleared a meaningful share of these without hardware replacement. 2015+ GM 8L90 (Camaro SS, Corvette C7, Cadillac CT6) throws P2704 from valve-body cross-leak between adjacent clutch-feed circuits; GM updated valve-body internals on later-production units. 2014+ ZF 8HP70/8HP75 (BMW M-cars, Dodge Hellcat) throws P2704 alongside mechatronic faults when the mech sleeve weeps fluid into the connector; a $2,200-2,800 mechatronic rebuild is the typical outcome. 2010+ Aisin AS69RC (Ram HD Cummins) and Mercedes 7G-Tronic 722.9 map Element E to manufacturer-specific clutches that don't translate one-to-one between brands — always pull the FSM cross-reference before condemning.
