OBD-II Code
P2701
Severity
Not yet reviewed
Nobody on our side has assessed this code yet, so we are not going to guess at how serious it is.
Can you drive it
We cannot say
Treat it as unknown until a shop reads it with live data. If the check-engine light is FLASHING, stop driving as soon as it is safe to — that means an active misfire, whatever the code.
Indicative cost (USD)
$250–$4,000
From this code's diagnostic notes. Varies by vehicle, diagnosis, parts, and local labor. This is not a repair quote.
P2701 is the same diagnostic as P2700 but applied to Friction Element B — the second monitored clutch pack or band in the gearset, which on most 6-speeds is the Forward or Intermediate clutch and on 8-speeds maps differently per manufacturer.
How a shop works this
Work from evidence to part, not the other way round. A code names a circuit or a symptom; it does not name the part that failed.
Note every code that is set, not just this one.
Codes that appear together usually narrow the cause faster than any one of them read alone.
Read the freeze frame — the conditions the fault was recorded under.
Cold or warm, idle or load, road speed and engine speed. A fault that only appears cold is a different fault from one that only appears under load, even with the same code on the scanner.
Confirm the fault is current rather than history.
Clear the code and see whether it returns under those same conditions. A code that does not come back may have been logged during a repair, a flat battery, or a bad connection that has since been disturbed.
Then follow the diagnostic notes further down this page, in the order they are written.
They are written in the order a shop works this code, cheapest checks first. Where they name a component, inspect its wiring and connector before replacing it.
If the code comes back after a repair, the underlying fault is still there. That is the point to bring in a scanner with live data and freeze-frame, or a shop that has one.

P2701 is the same diagnostic as P2700 but applied to Friction Element B — the second monitored clutch pack or band in the gearset, which on most 6-speeds is the Forward or Intermediate clutch and on 8-speeds maps differently per manufacturer. The TCM still watches RPM convergence at the apply event and still wants the shift complete inside 350-500 ms; trip threshold sits at 700-1000 ms or sometimes a hard fail at 1500 ms depending on calibration.
Cheapest-first ladder is identical
- fluid check first (level + color + burnt smell — burned fluid alone explains most P27xx codes), capture the live-data turbine and output RPM during the offending shift on a bidirectional scanner, then mechanical line-pressure test at idle (60-90 psi) and WOT (180-260 psi commanded).
- Check the PCS driving Element B on a scope — coil resistance 8-30 ohms cold, drive current 0.5-1.5 A; an open coil reads OL on the meter, a shorted one drops below 5 ohms.
- The hydraulic dwell between commanded apply and measured RPM change should be 200-400 ms for a band-apply and slightly shorter for a clutch-pack; longer means flow restriction (clogged separator-plate orifice, swollen sealing ring, or worn valve-body bore).
- Caveat: friction-element apply-time codes mean internal hydraulic delay — solenoid is cheapest, valve-body sealing rings + bore wear is medium, burned clutch packs is expensive.
- Pressure-test BEFORE pulling the pan; $400+ in labor disappears the moment you drop the valve body.

- 2011-2018Ford F-150/Mustang with the 6R80 frequently throws P2701 on the Forward clutch (Element B in Ford's mapping) when high-mileage fluid loses its friction modifier and the clutch hangs up at apply — a Mercon LV flush + filter sometimes buys 20-30k miles before the rebuild becomes unavoidable.
- 2007-2014GM 6L80/6L90 maps Element B to the 3-5-Reverse clutch on most calibrations; the failure pattern is wear in the apply circuit's check ball or accumulator.
- 2010+ZF 8HP (BMW 5/7-series, Dodge Charger/Challenger, Jeep Grand Cherokee) sees P2701 most often from a leaking mechatronic sleeve dropping pressure to the B clutch element specifically.
- 2007-2013Toyota AB60E (Tundra/Sequoia 5.7L) rarely throws P2701 unless fluid was neglected — the Aisin-built 6-speed is one of the more durable platforms in this class.
Estimated repair$250 to $4,000.
