P2299 indicates the PCM is seeing the brake pedal switch report applied at the same moment the accelerator pedal position sensor reports a meaningful throttle request, which the ECU treats as a safety-critical conflict and responds to by cutting throttle to idle until both inputs return to a sane state. The code is functionally an anti-unintended-acceleration check and it does not mean either sensor is bad, only that the two disagree about driver intent. Cheapest-first diagnostic: pull freeze frame and confirm the conditions (often a left-foot braker or a driver who rests their foot on the brake pedal), then physically inspect the brake light switch at the pedal bracket for a switch that is misadjusted, has a broken plastic plunger, or is staying partially depressed because the rubber bumper on the pedal arm has fallen out. Check that brake lights are not stuck on with the engine off. Caveat: a single failed brake light switch can also trigger cruise-control inoperative and shift-interlock complaints at the same time, so do not chase the APP sensor first when those symptoms are also present.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2012 Toyota and Lexus vehicles (Camry, Avalon, ES350, RX350) are the most common, where the brake light switch fails or the rubber pedal stopper deteriorates and falls out, allowing the pedal to rest a few millimeters depressed. 2007-2014 GM trucks with throttle-by-wire see the brake switch on the booster bracket fail intermittently. 2008-2013 Nissan Altima and Maxima often log P2299 alongside cruise-inoperative complaints from the same switch. 2010-2015 Honda Pilot and Odyssey commonly need the brake pedal position switch (a two-piece adjustable assembly) replaced and re-clipped to spec.
