P2257 is a generic OBD-II code meaning the PCM commanded the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system Control 'A' Circuit relay or solenoid ON and saw the feedback voltage stuck low — the control circuit isn't energizing the secondary air pump or its bypass/changeover valve. Secondary air injection runs only during cold start (typically the first 30-90 seconds after a cold-engine fire-up) to push fresh air into the exhaust manifold and heat the catalyst faster for emissions compliance; a P2257 means the system isn't even attempting to run, so cat light-off is delayed and the cold-start NMHC/CO emissions test fails on inspection. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Listen for the SAI pump at cold start — it sounds like a small vacuum cleaner running for 30-90 seconds; if you hear nothing, the pump isn't getting power. Watch live data for the SAI pump command bit and the SAI relay output ($0). (2) Pull and swap-test the SAI relay in the underhood fuse block — these are commodity relays and a stuck-open contact is the #1 P2257 cause ($15). (3) Backprobe the SAI relay control pin from the PCM — should be 12V key-off and 0V (or pulsed low) when the PCM commands SAI ON; check during a cold-start cycle since SAI is cold-only. No control pulse = PCM driver dead or harness open. (4) Verify the SAI pump current draw with a clamp meter on the supply wire — a healthy pump draws 5-20A momentary at startup ramping down to 8-12A steady; over-current means a seized pump (water ingestion is the typical cause on rusty exhaust systems), zero current means open winding or no feed power. (5) Check the SAI check valve between the pump and the exhaust manifold — it's a one-way valve that prevents hot exhaust from backfeeding into the pump, and when it sticks closed the pump runs but never builds the 1-3 psi of injection pressure (no airflow = no downstream O2 voltage change = P2257 or P2440 depending on logic). Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: for P2257 specifically, a clogged or seized check valve causes the pump to run but never build pressure, mimicking a circuit fault on some platforms — replace the $40 check valve before replacing the $400 pump, because the pump usually fails AFTER the check valve fails (hot exhaust backflow cooks the pump on subsequent cold starts).

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2006 BMW E46 (323i/325i/328i/330i) and 2005-2011 E90/E91/E92 (325i/328i/335i) is the highest-volume P2257 ticket in independent BMW shops — the SAI pump on these cars is mounted in the inner fender or behind the engine where it ingests rainwater on owners who park outside, and the OEM check valve in the cylinder head fails and rusts the pump rotor; BMW eventually issued service guidance to relocate the pump and add a heat shield. 2003-2014 GM Vortec V8 (4.8/5.3/6.0L LS-family) sees P2257 from a different failure path — the SAI shutoff/check valves in the cylinder head ports rust seized from condensation, and the pump tries to push against a wall; the fix is new check valves and often a new pump because the old one is heat-damaged. 2002-2010 VW/Audi 2.0L (ABA, AEG, AVH, AZG, BBW) and later 2.0T (BPY, CCTA) throws P2257 from the famous SAI combi-valve sticking — the valve is plastic, lives directly on the exhaust manifold, and warps shut after 80-120k miles.
