P2227 sets when the barometric pressure (BARO) sensor circuit reports a value within electrical range (so neither P2228 low nor P2229 high) but the reading doesn't change as expected or doesn't make sense given other inputs — typically a frozen reading, a value that drifts implausibly during driving, or a BARO that disagrees with MAP at key-on (the two should read within 1-2 kPa of each other before the engine starts). On most modern vehicles the BARO sensor is integrated into the MAP sensor or, more commonly, INTERNAL TO THE PCM/ECM itself — there's no external sensor to replace, the silicon pressure transducer sits on the PCM board with a vent. Expected behavior: BARO outputs 0.5-4.5V on a 5V reference, scaled at roughly 60-105 kPa total range, typically 95-101 kPa at sea level and dropping to 76-82 kPa at 8000 ft elevation; the value should change smoothly with weather fronts (1-3 kPa over a day) and with altitude (about 1 kPa per 300 ft of climb). Cheapest-first: scan live BARO PID at key-on engine-off and compare to MAP — they should agree within 1-2 kPa. Drive to a different elevation and recheck — if BARO doesn't track altitude change, the sensor or PCM is the suspect. Inspect any external MAP/BARO combination sensor for vent contamination (mud-dauber nests in the reference port are a real failure mode). If the BARO is internal to the PCM, P2227 commonly suggests an internal PCM fault — get a second opinion before quoting a PCM swap.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2011-2017 Ford 3.5L EcoBoost (F-150, Flex, Edge Sport) throws P2227 with the BARO sensor internal to the PCM — when the code is set after ruling out wiring, it points at the PCM itself, which is a $700-$1,200 repair including programming. 2007-2014 GM Vortec 5.3L/6.0L V8 trucks share the BARO function with the MAP sensor on the intake manifold — a contaminated MAP reference port (oil from the PCV path coating the silicon diaphragm) throws P2227 as the sensor lags barometric changes; clean or replace the MAP. 2008-2013 Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar V6 (300, Charger, Town & Country) throws P2227 from a known internal-PCM BARO drift covered under emissions warranty on certain VINs — TIPM and PCM checks are required before quoting parts. 2010-2016 Toyota 2GR-FE 3.5L (Highlander, RAV4 V6, Sienna) throws P2227 from a contaminated MAP/BARO combination sensor, especially in dusty climates.
