P2079 is the bank-2 intake-manifold tuning valve position sensor 'circuit high' fault - the position-sensor signal voltage has risen above the upper electrical threshold, typically above 4.8V on a 5V-referenced sensor. The failure modes are mirror-opposite of P2078: a short to the 5V reference or to battery voltage, or a sensor whose internal wiper has lost ground reference and floats high. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Disconnect the sensor and read the signal pin voltage KOEO - stuck-high with the sensor unplugged confirms the harness is shorted to the 5V reference or to switched battery somewhere between the sensor and the ECU; if it falls to floating with the sensor unplugged, the sensor itself is the failure. (2) Inspect the connector for pushed-back terminals - a 5V reference pin contacting the signal pin in a corroded connector produces exactly this code, and a clean-and-reseat fixes it. (3) Check sensor ground continuity to chassis with the harness loaded - a missing ground floats the signal reference high and triggers high-circuit codes that look identical to a shorted-to-power harness. The DMM check sequence runs about 15 minutes and isolates harness-vs-sensor before any parts are ordered.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2008-2014 Audi / VW 3.6L VR6 FSI throws P2079 from the same intake-flap motor assembly as P2078 - the sensor element on the bank-2 side is the common-failure component. 2005-2010 Mercedes-Benz M272 V6 throws P2079 alongside P2078 on alternating drive cycles as the intake-manifold runner-position sensor degrades. 2007-2012 Cadillac CTS / SRX with the 3.6L LLT throws P2079 from a chafed bank-2 IMRC sensor wire at the harness clip behind the cylinder head. 2009-2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L throws P2079 from sensor connector corrosion after road-salt exposure.
