OBD-II Code

P2077

Severity

Not yet reviewed

Nobody on our side has assessed this code yet, so we are not going to guess at how serious it is.

Can you drive it

We cannot say

Treat it as unknown until a shop reads it with live data. If the check-engine light is FLASHING, stop driving as soon as it is safe to — that means an active misfire, whatever the code.

Indicative cost (USD)

$120–$850

From this code's diagnostic notes. Varies by vehicle, diagnosis, parts, and local labor. This is not a repair quote.

P2077 is the bank-2 / sensor-B intake-manifold tuning valve position sensor 'range/performance' fault - the bank-2 IMRC actuator commanded position and the actual reported position diverge beyond tolerance.

How a shop works this

Work from evidence to part, not the other way round. A code names a circuit or a symptom; it does not name the part that failed.

  1. Note every code that is set, not just this one.

Codes that appear together usually narrow the cause faster than any one of them read alone.

  2. Read the freeze frame — the conditions the fault was recorded under.

Cold or warm, idle or load, road speed and engine speed. A fault that only appears cold is a different fault from one that only appears under load, even with the same code on the scanner.

  3. Confirm the fault is current rather than history.

Clear the code and see whether it returns under those same conditions. A code that does not come back may have been logged during a repair, a flat battery, or a bad connection that has since been disturbed.

  4. Then follow the diagnostic notes further down this page, in the order they are written.

They are written in the order a shop works this code, cheapest checks first. Where they name a component, inspect its wiring and connector before replacing it.

If the code comes back after a repair, the underlying fault is still there. That is the point to bring in a scanner with live data and freeze-frame, or a shop that has one.

P2077 is the bank-2 / sensor-B intake-manifold tuning valve position sensor 'range/performance' fault - the bank-2 IMRC actuator commanded position and the actual reported position diverge beyond tolerance. Because it's bank-specific, the diagnostic narrows to bank-2 hardware on V-engines: bank-2 IMRC actuator, bank-2 linkage, bank-2 position sensor.

Cheapest-first ladder

  1. Visually inspect the bank-2 runner-control linkage on the intake - snapped plastic arms or seized flaps are still the dominant failure mode and a 5-minute hood-up check catches them.
  2. Read live data for bank-2 IMRC commanded vs. actual; stuck actual with sweeping command = mechanical jam, sweeping actual that doesn't match command = sensor lying.
  3. Swap bank-1 and bank-2 IMRC actuators if the design allows (some Ford 3-valve and some GM applications use identical left/right actuators) - if the fault follows the swapped actuator to bank 1, the part is bad; if it stays on bank 2, the harness or linkage is the fault. Expensive-misdiagnosis trap: replacing both actuators when only one is bad, or quoting an intake manifold when only the linkage clip is broken.

  • 2004-2010Ford F-150 / Expedition with the 5.4L 3V Triton throws P2077 commonly alongside P2076 when the bank-2 IMRC linkage arm snaps - both arms tend to fail within 20k miles of each other, so quoting both sides at once is common shop practice on this engine.
  • 2007-2013Audi / VW 3.6L FSI VR6 (Touareg, Q7, CC) throws P2077 from a failed intake-flap motor on the bank-2 side.
  • 2008-2014Cadillac CTS / SRX / STS with the 3.6L LLT throws P2077 from intake-manifold runner-control actuator failure on the bank-2 (rear, on transverse mounting) side.
  • 2003-2007Nissan 350Z / Infiniti G35 with the VQ35DE throws P2077 from a stuck VIAS (Variable Induction Air System) actuator on the rear bank.
