P2076 sets when the ECU detects that the Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMTV / IMRC / SCV) position sensor on bank 1 or a single-bank engine is reading out of the expected range - the actuator commanded one position (open or closed) but the position feedback reports a value implausibly different from command. The intake manifold tuning system uses motor- or vacuum-actuated runner control to vary the effective intake-tract length for low-speed torque vs. high-RPM breathing; when the system can't confirm its commanded state, the ECU sets P2076 and typically defaults the valve to an open or limp position. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Inspect the IMRC actuator/linkage on the intake - broken plastic linkage arms, snapped return springs, or a stuck flap dominate the failure mode on engines past 100k miles. (2) Read live data for IMRC commanded vs. actual position - a stuck-at-one-end actual position with command sweeping is your confirmation the actuator is mechanically jammed. (3) DMM the IMRC position sensor (often a potentiometer-style sensor) - 5V reference, ground, and signal voltage should sweep proportionally with linkage movement; flat or stuck signal means sensor failure rather than mechanical bind. Expensive-misdiagnosis trap: full intake-manifold replacement when the fault is a $25 plastic linkage clip.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2011 Ford F-150 / Expedition / Mustang with the 4.6L / 5.4L 3-valve Triton throws P2076 frequently from snapped IMRC linkage arms - the plastic arms fatigue and the runner flaps droop into the airstream, throwing both the position code and rough-idle complaints. 2007-2014 GM trucks with the 5.3L / 6.0L Vortec throw P2076 from a failed IMRC motor or stuck butterfly. 2008-2013 Audi / VW 2.0T (BPY, CCTA) throws P2076 from a failing intake-manifold flap motor (the swirl/tumble flap actuator) - VW TSB coverage exists for upgraded motor part numbers. 2003-2010 Mazda 3 / 6 / CX-7 throw P2076 from a stuck VAD (Variable Air Duct) actuator.
