P2009 is technically a SAE-generic code for Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Control Stuck Open Bank 1, but Mazda's interpretation matters because Skyactiv-G and earlier MZR engines implement IMT differently. On Mazda the IMT (sometimes labeled VAD or Variable Tumble in service literature) is an intake-runner valve that switches between long and short intake paths or opens/closes a tumble flap to optimize cylinder filling across the rpm range. When stuck open the valve fails to close at low rpm, killing low-end torque and confusing the MAP/MAF data the ECU uses for fuel calculation. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Visually inspect the IMT actuator linkage on the intake manifold — Mazda uses a vacuum-actuated or electric servo actuator depending on year and model. Disconnected, broken, or unhooked linkage is the #1 cheap fix. (2) Vacuum-actuated systems (older MZR): pull the vacuum line and apply hand-pump vacuum directly to the actuator; the IMT shaft should rotate visibly through its full travel and hold vacuum without leaking down. A leaking diaphragm in the actuator is a common failure. (3) Electric-actuator systems (Skyactiv-G): scan live data for IMT position commanded vs. actual — should track within 5% across the rpm range. (4) Inspect the IMT shaft and butterfly valves for carbon buildup at the manifold gasket face — Skyactiv-G intake manifolds carbon up at 80,000-120,000 miles to the point where the valves can't fully close. A walnut-blast or manual carbon clean restores function. (5) Most expensive: replace the entire intake manifold assembly with integrated IMT actuator ($400-$900 part). Don't order a new intake manifold before checking the actuator linkage and vacuum lines — a $0 disconnected hose throws an identical code to a $700 manifold.
Vehicle-specific patterns
Vehicle-specific patterns: 2014-2018 Mazda CX-5 and Mazda3/6 Skyactiv-G 2.0L and 2.5L are the volume P2009 platforms — the IMT electric actuator on Skyactiv intakes fails internally (motor windings or position-sensor potentiometer) around 80,000-100,000 miles. 2007-2013 Mazda CX-7 with the 2.3L DISI turbo throws P2009 from carbon clogging the IMT butterflies because the DISI engine has no port-injection fuel wash to keep the intake clean; a walnut-blast clears it. 2007-2012 Mazda3 and Mazda5 with the 2.0L/2.3L MZR throws P2009 from the vacuum-actuated IMT diaphragm tearing — replace the actuator ($85-$150 part) without touching the manifold. 2016+ MX-5 Miata ND with Skyactiv-G 2.0L sees P2009 less frequently but when it appears it's usually a true electric actuator failure on the integrated intake. Estimated repair: $0 (reconnect hose DIY) to $1,200 (full intake manifold replacement on Skyactiv CX-5 with labor).
