P1716 is a Ford-specific code meaning the Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS) circuit has failed — the PCM/TCM is seeing a signal outside the valid voltage band for any of the six gear positions on the MLPS (the rotary sensor at the trans selector shaft that reports P-R-N-D-2-1). This is the older Ford gearbox equivalent of the TRS on AODE/4R70W applications. Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Disconnect the MLPS connector and inspect for ATF contamination, corrosion, or backed-out pins — the MLPS lives on the LH side of the trans case (5R55E) or atop the valve body (4R70W early variants) and is the canonical Ford 'fluid wicks into the connector' failure ($0, 10 min). (2) Verify MLPS voltage steps at the sensor connector with KOEO and the shifter cycled through all positions: typical values are Park ~0.5V, Reverse ~1.2V, Neutral ~2.0V, Drive ~2.8V, Manual-2 ~3.6V, Manual-1 ~4.4V; missing steps, voltages stuck on one rail, or jumpy values during slow shift movement all indicate sensor or wiper failure. (3) Check the 5V reference and ground at the MLPS connector — a corroded reference circuit will collapse all six voltage steps toward 0V and set P1716 even with a mechanically perfect sensor. (4) If the sensor passes bench voltage but the PCM still sets the code, ohm out the three signal wires from sensor to PCM connector pin-to-pin. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: replacing the MLPS without first fixing the trans bulkhead seal that's letting ATF migrate into the harness is the most common $200 mistake on this code — the new sensor will be contaminated within weeks; address the fluid path first.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1996-2003 Ford Explorer/Mountaineer and 1997-2011 Ford Ranger with the 5R55E/5R55W/5R55S throws P1716 routinely from MLPS internal contact wear and from harness contamination at the case bulkhead. 1996-2010 F150 and 1996-2014 E-series vans with the early AODE/4R70W (pre-2004 electronic TRS revision) see P1716 from the same MLPS contact wear; later models migrated to a digital TRS and the code shifted to P1702. 1996-2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor sees P1716 in police-package fleet duty cycles. 1996-2010 Mustang GT/V6 with the AODE/4R70W sees P1716 less frequently because of lighter shift duty than truck applications. Estimated repair: $55 to $650.
