P1707 is a Ford-specific code meaning the Transfer Case Neutral Indicator hardware circuit is faulted — the PCM expects a clean logic-level input (typically pulled high or low) from the transfer-case neutral switch on 4WD electric-shift systems, and the input is out of range, open, or shorted. The PCM uses this signal to inhibit the trans from shifting into a drive gear when the t-case is in Neutral (for flat-towing). Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Inspect the transfer-case neutral switch and its harness pigtail — these switches mount on the t-case housing and live directly in the wheel-spray and road-salt firing line; corrosion at the connector is the most common failure ($0 inspection, then $40-90 switch). (2) Back-probe the neutral-indicator wire at the t-case switch connector and verify the signal toggles between low (<1V) and high (battery voltage, ~12V) as the t-case is shifted from a drive mode into Neutral via the dash selector. No toggle = bad switch. Toggles at the switch but not at the PCM = harness break. (3) Inspect the transfer-case shift motor encoder for related codes (P1815, P1834, etc.) — a stuck shift motor can leave the t-case mechanically in Neutral with the switch correctly reporting that state, and the P1707 fault then chases a different root cause. (4) For older mechanical-shift t-cases retrofitted with an electric controller, verify the switch installation depth — too shallow and the switch never sees the detent ball; too deep and it grounds permanently. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't replace the GEM/4WD module for a P1707 before swapping the $40 neutral switch and inspecting the switch ground — Ford's electric-shift t-case modules are commonly replaced unnecessarily when a corroded switch ground stud on the t-case housing is the actual fault.

Vehicle-specific patterns

Vehicle-specific patterns: 1999-2007 F250/F350 SuperDuty 4WD electric-shift (BorgWarner 4406/4407 t-case) throws P1707 routinely from neutral-switch corrosion and from the well-known shift-motor encoder ring wear; on the SuperDuty fleet many shops bundle the switch + encoder service. 2001-2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and 2001-2017 Expedition with the electric-shift Control Trac t-case (BW4411/4414) see P1707 from the same switch corrosion path plus a t-case position sensor that ages out around 100k miles. 1998-2011 Ford Ranger 4WD with the electronic-shift BW1354 sees P1707 less often because of lighter duty cycle but the failure mode is identical. P1707 on a vehicle that's been off-road or had recent transfer-case fluid service almost always points at the switch (often disturbed during service); P1707 on a fleet truck with no recent service points at the harness or the shift motor. Estimated repair: $50 to $1,100.
