P1701 is a Ford-specific transmission code meaning the PCM/TCM detected a reverse-engagement error — the trans was commanded into Reverse but the input/output shaft speed ratio didn't match what Reverse should produce, OR the reverse band slipped during a 2-3 upshift on the AODE/4R70W/4R75W (the reverse circuit shares hydraulic pressure with the 2-3 shift on these gearboxes). Cheapest-first ladder: (1) Check fluid level and condition first — burnt-smelling fluid that's dark brown instead of pink/red means clutch debris and the reverse code is a symptom, not the disease ($0, 5 min). (2) Scan live data and watch TR (transmission range) sensor voltage stepping through P-R-N-D-2-1 — on a 4R70W with a digital TR sensor the steps are roughly 0.5V (Park), 1.2V (Reverse), 2.0V (Neutral), 2.8V (Drive), 3.6V (2), 4.4V (1); a Reverse-position voltage that reads in the Neutral or Park band will set P1701 even with a mechanically healthy trans. (3) Line-pressure test at the trans test port — Reverse should command max line pressure (220-280 psi on a 4R70W); low pressure means front pump wear, leaking reverse servo, or stuck EPC solenoid. (4) Pan drop and inspect for clutch material and bronze flake before any teardown decision. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: before condemning the AODE/4R70W for a P1701 reverse fault, check the case-mounted internal harness connector — fluid migration along the wire jacket from a failed bulkhead seal causes intermittent P1701 + P1703 + TR sensor codes that look identical to a slipping reverse clutch but only need a $35 connector and a fluid service, not a $2,800 rebuild.

Vehicle-specific patterns: AODE/4R70W/4R75W ships in E150/E250/E350 vans (1996-2014), F150/F250 light-duty (1997-2010), Crown Vic Police Interceptor (1996-2011), and Mustang GT/V6 (1996-2010); P1701 on the Crown Vic Police Interceptor fleet is so common from severe-duty reverse cycling (parking lot maneuvers) that many municipal shops auto-quote a reverse-servo + band kit at the first P1701 event. 2011-2020 F150 with the 6R80 6-speed throws P1701 from a different failure mode — the lead-frame internal harness connector cracks and lets ATF wick into the connector body, dropping signal on the TR contacts during reverse selection (Ford issued service guidance on lead-frame replacement as a sub-assembly). 2011-2017 Mustang and 2011-2017 Expedition with the 6R80 see the same lead-frame pattern. For older 4R70W applications, the giveaway between a hydraulic problem and an electrical problem is whether the code sets at standstill (electrical, TR/MLPS suspect) or only during a 2-3 upshift under load (hydraulic, reverse servo or 2-3 accumulator suspect).
