P1640 on a Mercedes is an ECU EEPROM / internal control module fault on the M272 V6 and M273 V8 platforms — the ECU runs an internal self-check on its EEPROM (the non-volatile memory that holds adaptations, immobilizer keys, and trim values) at every key-on, and when the checksum fails or a memory cell won't read/write reliably, it sets P1640. On some VIN-coverage years the code also covers Outside Air Temp sensor faults, but on M272/M273 gasoline V6/V8 cars the dominant interpretation is internal ECU memory corruption. This is not a sensor code you fix with a $40 part — it's an ECU-health code that frequently means the unit needs to be sent out for repair or replacement and recoded to the chassis. Diagnostic order: (1) Read all stored codes with XENTRY — if P1640 stands alone with no other powertrain faults, the ECU's EEPROM is the suspect; if P1640 is accompanied by random sensor faults that come and go, the ECU's power supply or grounds may be marginal and pulling internal voltage out of spec. (2) Check ECU battery supply at the connector with a meter — should be steady 12.4-14.4V with ignition on; voltage dips below 11V during cranking that don't recover within 100ms can corrupt EEPROM writes. (3) Inspect for water intrusion at the ECU location (under the wiper cowl on M-Class and E-Class) — clogged cowl drains let rainwater drip directly onto the ECU and the resulting corrosion is a known killer. Expensive-misdiagnosis caveat: don't buy a used ECU from a salvage yard expecting to plug-and-play — Mercedes ECUs from M272/M273 cars are SCN-coded to the immobilizer, instrument cluster, and EIS (electronic ignition switch), and a swap requires either dealer SCN coding (which Mercedes restricts on stolen-flagged units) or sending the original ECU to a repair specialist like Module Master or Diesel Performance Brokers who can rebuild the EEPROM on the existing unit for $300-500 versus $1,500-2,500 for a coded replacement.

Vehicle-specific patterns: 2005-2011 Mercedes C-Class/E-Class/S-Class with the M272 3.0L/3.5L V6 or M273 4.6L/5.5L V8 (W203/W204/W211/W212/W221) is the canonical P1640 platform — the ME9.7 ECU used across this family has a known EEPROM weakness that surfaces between 80-150K miles, especially on cars that have seen battery-disconnect events or jump starts under load. 2003-2014 Mercedes C-Class/SLK with the M271 1.8L Kompressor uses a different ME-SFI variant but suffers similar EEPROM degradation when subjected to low-voltage cranking on a weak battery. 2007-2010 ML320/ML350 BlueTec and Sprinter with the OM642 diesel use a separate Bosch EDC17 controller and don't typically throw P1640 the same way — diesel ECU failures on those platforms more often manifest as injector quantity adjustment (IQA) coding loss after a battery swap, which is a different repair path. Note also that on some VW/Audi vehicles P1640 refers to the auxiliary heater control module — make sure you're matching the code definition to a Mercedes VIN before condemning the engine ECU. Estimated repair: $300 (EEPROM rebuild and recode on a sent-out ECU) to $2,800 (new ECU plus full SCN coding plus key/EIS sync at dealer on a W221 S550).
